Trying to fix the upper rotted parts of the door support is turning out to be more difficult than I think it needs to be, so I decided to remove the cowl and fix it from above.
I think I'm going to try and cut the lower cowl above the door support, fix the door support, and then weld the lower cowl back together.
The underside of the upper cowl doesn't look that bad but I'm sort of surprised that it's not painted. The only rust holes right now are in the window channel but we'll see once it's sand blasted.
I'm really glad I removed the upper cowl because there was a lot of mouse homes under there and some questionable metal.

everytime someone pulls their cowl apart I'm amazed how much crap is under there.

It does seem to be a really good crap trap. I wonder if I could somehow attach a screen to the vent opening to stop the debris from collecting in there.

Crap trap, new term. Def. A place for leaves, pine needles, dirt, debris, and mouse nests to culminate in 1950-1970's Chrysler vehicles. Including Dodge and Plymouth. Once designed for fresh air intake to cabin area.
I have seen people tack or adhere screen material to the back of cowl sections before reinstallation. Heck, they do it on new cars. It's good you did it, you'll have much better piece of mind down the line.
Not parking it under a tree for 20 years also helps.

Crap Trap......LOL. A screen sure would have been a good option. Gotta hand it to Ma Mopar, she's been helping keep floor boards wet & rotten for decades now, thanks to that design and the early demise of cowl plenums. Keep up the good work!

Now that I have the upper cowl removed I cut the bottom cowl so I have access to the door support under it.
I got the section of the lower cowl removed and found more rusted metal that needs to be repaired.
Now that I can access the the rusted part of the door support it's now easier to fix.
Now on to the next.

They should have made them like the D Series trucks, at least you can pull them off with a few screws.

Pretty much when I was fixing the A-pillar to door support I noticed the rust hole, that's when I decided to pull the upper cowl and see what was going on underneath. Once the upper cowl was off and the lower cowl was still in the way, I figured that I'd remove it as well. I didn't feel like bracing the roof so it wouldn't move if I removed the lower cowl so I came up with the idea to just remove what was necessary to access the top of the kick panel and door support, and the rest as they say, was history.

I do feel better knowing it's fixed. I started fixing the rust holes on the bottom of the kick panel and door support when I broke my Blair spot weld cutter, and not just the blade but the spring loaded pilot snapped off as well. I decided that was a good time to quit for the day. :angryfire:

Yea that would have been nice, I hate drilling out spot welds.

i knew you would get those rust hole bandits,on the blair breakage that is why i ordered two kits one for a spare when dealing with this 40 plus year old metal even blair would say time out i am worn out! great job.

Yea Johnny I'm trying to leave no stone unturned when it comes to the rust on the Coronet. Right before the Blair broke I was thinking that I had better replace the cutter because it was getting dull.

John, I use the Blair myself and soon will be taking my old floor out, i have one now (last one) sooo, I guess ill be getting a new set, there has to be someone that sharpens those things!!!

I broke my blair cutter too. haven't replaced it yet. just went to the local welding store and got a spot weld cutter drill bit with a pilot point on it. been working real good for me. The one I got was a little bigger than the spot welds.

Actually Ron I think I'm more upset that the arbor for the cutters broke today. That thing was suppose to last forever haha.

I've gotta say, I've got the best kids in the world. Look what my boy EJ surprised me with today.
He knew I didn't have a work bench in the garage so he made one for me in construction class. It's all scrap and reclaimed wood from his class so it didn't cost him anything. He also made himself a smaller version as a bench for working on his computer. I love my kids. :hello2:
