742 gear pattern.

I learned this from Strange. Use a drill (not an impact) to turn the pinion. Way quicker, easier, and leaves a nice pattern.

The coast pattern is good but the drive has gone right to the toe - damn!!!!
Not sure of your situation bit IMO I would send that gear set back.
I believe you are setting it up correctly and you have plenty of photo evidence of the steps you have taken to get it right.
I have bought stuff off Cass and he seems a really good guy so I am sure he will help.

And this is why I got a pinion depth checking tool/dial indicator. Tells me where the pinion is according to what's marked on the pinion. My last set up was with a Dana 70 and my tool wasn't made for them so had to use a depth mic and checked pattern after doing it that way just to at least make sure it was where it needed to be but on the 60's and 8 3/4's, I don't even bother looking at the pattern when using this tool. In your case, I'd concentrate on getting the drive side looking right. That's more important than coast side....

Toe/heel means squat in my book. As long as the face/root is centered. That being said its very close. Pinion shim just a few thou to thick now.

When you get the pinion depth right the two marks give or take should be opposite each other.
Backlash will move them up or down the tooth from the toe to the heel.
I don't agree that the toe/heel position is irrelevant.
Have you talked to Cass he must have some idea as to can it be corrected.

I went from 6 to 9 thou on the BL and it seemed to move the pattern to the heel a bit more. I am happy with it. Thanks for the help everyone. This will be going in My 470 Duster, pretty much a strip with some street duty.

With the change in backlash that looks pretty damn reasonable.
The main load is coming on the centre of the tooth which is definitely the strongest place.
Do you mind posting some feedback on how it sounds on the street just for reference?
Best of luck. Steve

With open hedders and 391s its gonna be hard to hear anything. LOL
Not hard to stick on some quiet mufflers right off of the collectors.....did that for street driving before I decided straights sounded better :D

I wanted to educate myself on gear patterns while working at CTC Chrysler Engineering Center. I talked to an axle engineer and he gave me these sheets. I found them interesting. Each picture has a description of what the pattern looks the way it does.
