Bit the Bullet: Going EFI

Saw a “review” with a 396 chevelle, where they claimed an average mpg improvement from 12 to 16.

If that is real (& common) the math says the unit would pay for itself in about 10k miles @ $4 gas (about what gas costs where I am)

So am really curious if people see mpg improvements with the sniper; these cars get such low mpg a few points make a big difference...

I know we just keep our heads in the sand with mpg on these, so no worries if before info is not available. ;)

To be honest with you I'm not sure, I've only driven the car around two-hours so far with the Sniper EFI system. Finally swapped in the Hotchkis torsion bars and new 16:1 steering box, so waiting to get another front-end alignment next week. Honestly, it seems like it's getting better fuel economy but I don't know at this point. I'm installing a WIN 10 tablet in the future to run the Sniper EFI software (gauge panel) as well as use the 4G-LTE Cellular (GPS) hardware for MPH/TRIP/MPG tracking. Eventually the car will be 100%, pretty close to where I want it other than it could use air-conditioning, last check-mark on the list.

My dads 505 went from 8mpg to 10mpg when he drives like a civilized human being.

Takes a lot of fuel to feed 505ci :moparsmiley:

While we're talking about our 500ci 600HP wedges only getting 8-10 MPG with antique TBI EFI systems;

505 likes fuel like Mongo likes candy

He’s happy, so I’m happy.

Hopefully it wasn’t taken as ding to these rides... it’s just that 2 or 3 mpg is a huge improvement when around 10 mpg, assuming it has similar or increased performance.

Squeezing out 2 or 3 mpg more from 45 mpg Prius is nearly nothing...

Supposedly my 383 2-barrel use to get 10 City, 20 Hwy, and good for a 50 ft burnout, but topped out at 90mph with the 2.76 rear-end...

I wouldn't count on any mileage improvement when switching from carburetors to EFI. If you see some consider it a bonus. The main reasons I switched were faster start-ups, instant idle (even when cold), much less fuel smell in the garage after parking and effortless tuning ability without opening the hood. I love my EFI...

When I set mine for an AFR of 15, I gained about 1.5 miles per gallon driving to Carlisle. It was really lean on acceleration but ran like a kitten on the highway.
Almost like a different cam/engine.

Hey, 18 gallons x 3mpg = 54 miles. I'll take it. Plus, just the ease of starting and smoother throttle response is great, too.

Testing out the software today. Will be great when installed on a Windows tablet and mounted in vehicle (very soon). Love the actual EFI software so far, pretty incredible how editable all the fields are; nearly overwhelming. All the gauges are user configurable, each one can be whatever the driver chooses, even the number fields can be changed (ie 11.5-14.5v on battery gauge). This will be a nice setup, acquiring a windows tablet with wwan hardware to have a built in GPS for speed/mph/trip tracking.
