Finally time to pull the trigger . . . starting on the New (much anticipated) SHOP - Build

Give me a week and some things are going to happen . . . now that I have a pad . . . look out ! ! !

Can I see a light and the end of the tunnel ? ! ?

The other day, when I was walking to the end of the driveway I had a few visitors in the yard . . .

View attachment 1532317

Started the beginning of the week trying to set up the corners of the blocks to help be able to run the blocks . . .

View attachment 1532318

And the location of the middle wall - along with the for corner . . . both courses . . .

View attachment 1532319

And wayyyyy in the back . . . the last corner of the shop . . .

View attachment 1532320

Prepping the site for the blocks, get the blocks all set out where they need to be . . .

View attachment 1532321

Had this idea for the mortar bin . . . and being able to move it around ( got a great concrete slab to assist )

View attachment 1532322

The middle wall is kinda important as it's probably the next wall to go up and get the center section built . . .

View attachment 1532323

Both course have been set and they're getting poured full of concrete and setting the anchor bolts to hold the walls . . .

View attachment 1532324

Middle wall is completed less the concrete inside of them . . . but it's starting to look like a building . . .

View attachment 1532325

And if you didn't ALSO notice . . . the front wall of the shop is also completed . . . and also filled with concrete . . .
And . . . the anchor bolts are set in the wall too . . .

View attachment 1532326

Got a busy rest of this weekend - got a lot of concrete to be poured into the walls . . .
( and I thought I was done with concrete . . . sheeesh . . . )

Alright . . . full disclosure . . .

My baby brother flew into town for a couple days this week and wanted to help with the shop build . . . he learned
- how to lay blocks . . .
- how to operate a backhoe ( just a little )
- played with the bucket on the tractor too, while we had it out . . . gotta have some FUN too ! !

He was a HUGE help in getting me this far this fast . . . his assistance was VERY welcome and appreciated . . .
He flys out in the morning . . . so the rest of the weekend is all ME . . . Oh Boy ! ! !

More Later . . .
I was starting to get worried that you had slacked off until I saw this post.

Looking really good now.....I bet you cannot wait to get some framing up.

LOOKS GREAT!!
Can't do that in NJ; 2019 a rain tax became law to "collect fees" by county & local gov based on property water run-off.

That's just plain wrong....nobody owns the rain, so how can they tax it?

It runs into street, enviro hazard: if it runs onto grass & absorbs into ground, enviro hazard. $$$$ is SUPPOSE to go towards getting water run-off into sewers, ok, sure. In 1976-77, ALL NJ homes were SUPPOSE to be on city water & sewer within 15 years(?), DIDN'T HAPPEN & all we have is water bill (private co) & COUNTY & CITY sewer authorities ($135 per quarter). Camden City gets water & sewer FREE and water CAN NOT BE SHUT OFF, PERIOD. $$ goes to a NEW authorities for towns & counties.
I WANT TO GO TO CAROLINAS, mid state, 50+ miles inland would be good.

Another day . . . another day of progress on the shop build . . .

Gotta love it . . . things are finally starting to happen after that long foundation prep . . .

Got all of my center walls filled with concrete ( thought I was done with concrete )
- and got the anchor bolts set in the concrete for the sill plates . . .
- here's the center section of the wall

sm_shop1083.jpg

And the back section of the wall . . .

sm_shop1084.jpg

The first course of the wall on the far right is now set . . . ready for the second course tomorrow
- will be working on that in the AM when the site is in the shade of the trees . . .
( not like this first course that was done in the heat of the day with the sun blaring . . . )

sm_shop1085.jpg

And last but not least . . .

The concrete slab has been Obie Approved ! ! ! !

sm_shop1086.jpg

Tomorrow might also include getting part or all of the front wall in place . . .
- need to figure out how to tie it into the other part of the building with all the water proofing that is in place.
( that should be a whole lot of fun )

More Later . . .

Trusses for the second floor have been designed and I'm being told 2 weeks or less turn around time . . .

Lot of activity "just might" be happening here pretty quickly . . .

More Later . . .

You are fortunate to have the space to build a shop of that size. Good for you.

Aushwitz (2).jpg

Gotta ask Larry, unless I missed it what is the 5 sided bump out on the far end for? Machine gun turret? And thanks for posting all of this.

Situation Room for Obie to scan property for rabbits & squirrels, set plan of attack and launch his attack. Where he's sleeping is the sleeping barracks area and galley.

LOOKS GREAT!!! And what @Kern Dog said too!!!

Was wondering when people were going to start asking about that . . .

Was wondering when people were going to start asking about that . . . and have been trying to keep it hush-hush . . .

- Machine gun turret ! ! LOVE IT ! ! ! ( might have to consider this for the Zombie Apocalypse )

- Situation Room . . . pretty good guess . . . but it'll be a bit on the small size for that . . .

It's a barn . . . and what does a barn have . . . A Silo . . . ( or as I've been telling people - my Missile Silo ) - for now, just going to keep you all guessing . . . .

And now for something completely different than you've been seeing lately . . . Wait for it . . .

Now for a nice change of pace, but first, let's get up to date on the foundation . . .

All the wall have been set - except for the back wall - trying to figure out what I'm going to do there
( we'll go over it at the end . . . )

sm_shop1087.jpg

And now - for the "completely different" aspect . . .

WOOD instead of concrete for a change of pace ! ! ! Cutting the sill plates with pressure treated 2 x 6 . . .
Here's how I get the hole to line up ( this can be a rea pain when you set the wall and they don't match up ! )
Cut it to length . . . stand it up on end, mark on both sides of the bolt . . .

sm_shop1088.jpg

Measure the offset from the front face of the building - 2 1/2" - 3" for the bolt . . .

sm_shop1089.jpg

Measure the same distance from the front edge of the board . . . that's the hole location . . .
As for drilling . . . 1/2" bolts are drilled in the wood with 5/8" hole to give some wiggle room . . .

sm_shop1090.jpg

Now that I have them set, and they will sit in the sun for a day . . . I want them secure . . .
Cut small pieces of wood and drill holes to take up the spacing of the 2 x 6 at the bottom of the wall . . .
Tighten it down and let it hold these boards in place till the wall gets placed on top of them . . .

sm_shop1091.jpg

Got the first 3 sill plate set in place and bolted down . . . to hold them in place . . .

sm_shop1092.jpg

And - YES - the foam has indeed been paced under the sill plates . . .

sm_shop1093.jpg

And now . . . working with EVEN more wood . . . don't know if I can remember how to do this . . .
Laying out the first 16' of wall - getting ready to have it built and set into place . . .

sm_shop1094.jpg

Went through the same process with the bottom 2 x 6s for the wall - and made sure the holes did line up properly !

sm_shop1095.jpg

And . . . tomorrow these boards will all get cut to the proper length and get put together . . .
And . . . hopefully . . . it'll get stood up and place on the sill plates . . . That'll be a great feeling ! !
Need to get a 2 x 12 for the header over this person door and the 10' wide garage door as well . . .

sm_shop1096.jpg

Now for the question of the back wall . . .

My neighbor replace (3) glass French doors on his house with better ones, and gave the ones removed to me
- these could be placed on the back wall . . . or they could go on the 2nd floor part of the shop . . .
- have a commercial 12' wide x 10' high roll up door that can go back there . . . ( trying to see if it's still usable )
- or just get another garage door like the other ones I've got and put it back there . . .

Not sure what I want to do there . . . yet . . . giving it some thought . . .

Sure is a nice feeling to not be lifting and lugging 80 pound concrete bags around ( it will have to be done again )
Still got the far side wall to fill with concrete and set anchor bolts . . .

Got a lot done in a couple days . . . full pallet of concrete mixed and poured plus 150 of 200 cinder blocks set . . .

And the floor trusses have been ordered with a "tentative" ship date of next Friday ! ! ! Things are happening . . .

Gotta LOVE it . . .

I think you've got problems. The inspector doesn't look too happy about that middle section...

Seriously: Amazing work and progress on this. Your garage will be amazing when it's done!

Food & water bowls and dog bed missing.

Under the lights . . . the first wall of the center section is installed ! ! ! Whoooohoooo ! ! !

Started on the wall when there was some light, but the light disappears quickly this time of year . . .

Still got some things to do, but it's up and in place . . . It was a good day . . . ( make the evening )
- need a 2 x 12 for the header over the people door and the garage door too
- a bit more framing above the headers too

sm_shop1097.jpg

Got hopes for a LOT more of this to be happening this weekend . . . and looking forward to it ! !

Thought that my tractor was going to be a huge help - but the backhoe did not help out as much as hoped,
it does not go high enough to be real helpful . . . will be trying the bucket on the next wall . . .

Once again - the trusty old Cherry Picker came to the rescue and got the job done . . .
- it moves buildings and lifts walls . . . even used it for an engine a couple times . . .

More Later . . .

Seriously: Amazing work and progress on this. Your garage will be amazing when it's done!

He's wondering why the rest of his "dog house" has not been completed yet . . . but he likes the floor ! !

Food & water bowls and dog bed missing.

Yeah . . . and that too . . . no food and water bowl and where is my BED ! ! !

Was hoping to get more done this weekend, but tonight's effort sure helped out . . .

Had a pretty good weekend, and got some stuff done . . . but was hoping to get further on this . . .

Once the wall got stood up, the rest of the wood could be added ( less wood, less weight . . . )
Working on framing in the doorway . . .

sm_shop1098.jpg

Think that'll work pretty good on the the top of the door . . .

sm_shop1099.jpg

Finish framing in the header and the studs above the door . . .

sm_shop1100.jpg

Next in line, is the other side of the garage door . . . only about 2 feet and then it's into the other lean-to . . .

sm_shop1101.jpg

Speaking of . . . the end wall had not been fully filled with concrete nor set the anchor bolts in place yet . . .
And I thought I was done with concrete . . . Argh ! ! . . . but got that wall all done so that wall can be built too . . .

sm_shop1102.jpg

Got home from work about 6:00 . . . and got started on this wall - had not one bit of it done . . .
as the daylight left . . . had it ready to be stood up and almost in place . . . now all that is left . . .
IS to stand it up on the wall, and get the bolts properly placed into the bolt holes . . .

sm_shop1103.jpg

Not too sure which of these pictures gives the best perspective . . . but the wall is in place now . . .

sm_shop1104.jpg

This is jut a little different view to give you the perspective . . .

sm_shop1105.jpg

Lastly - added the cross boards to indicate an 8" door . . . was thinking a 10 x 10 . . . but thinking 8 x 10 now . . .

sm_shop1106.jpg

Got home from work about 6:00 . . . got started on the wall . . . by 8:00 had it built and placed on the cinder blocks . . .
CAN'T complain about that . . . Happy to be heading down that stretch already . . .

2nd Floor trusses are being delivered on Friday . . . might have some floor installed this weekend . . .

More Later . . .

Trucking along nicely Larry.

My guess on the 'octagonal room' .....a room for spotting turkeys or other wild game creeping around your wooded area out back.

Good weekend . . . the good, the bad, the screwups, and fixing the screwups . . .

Still making progress, and making progress on the build . . . but things happened this weekend . . .

Trusses were scheduled to be delivered on Friday ! ! ! Very excited . . . could not wait . . .

Got started Thursday night under the lights . . . and got this panel installed above the door . . .

sm_shop1107.jpg

Then got up the next morning - and found out that the panel was installed "backwards" . . . ( oh well )
So I had to come up with a plan to get the panel reversed . . . so I cane up with this "crazy" idea . . .

And this is the plan that was devised . . . and believe it or not, it worked like a champ ! ! !

sm_shop1108.jpg

Then on Friday, the next section of the wall was built . . . and stood up - while waiting for the trusses . . .
Progress ! ! !

sm_shop1109.jpg

The pile of wood is slowly getting smaller as the shop is getting bigger ! !
Then the bad news . . . the trusses never arrived even after the company told me that would be here.

sm_shop1110.jpg

Continued with building the wall, adding the fire stops, and the cross bracing . . . getting this wall done !
Then . . . sent an e-mail to the company and le them know that I was very disappointed . . .

Interesting thing - got a call from the company - they apologized for the mix up, and informed me that the trusses
were not even sent over to be built - something went awry . . . they'll have them for me this week.
Expecting a call Monday to get a plan on getting the trusses to me.

sm_shop1111.jpg

Then on Sunday . . . got the last part of the wall built and stood it up in place ! ! ! The wall is up now ! !

sm_shop1112.jpg

Then . . . got the header built over one of the doors and the framing above it done . . .

sm_shop1113.jpg

Next . . . got the fire stops all installed in the center section of the wall . . . past the halfway point . . .

sm_shop1114.jpg

And the pile of lumber is continuing to shrink . . .

sm_shop1115.jpg

Just another look at the wall . . . and it's moving along quickly . . . Love this view ! ! !

sm_shop1116.jpg

Not having the trusses did not hurt me . . . but the customer service and the call on Saturday - pretty impressive !

They said that might be able to have them to on Monday . . . but will get a call tomorrow on when . . .

More Later . . .

sm_shop1113.jpg

Is the "FOREMAN" approving as you progress?

Busy week and things are getting done . . . and rain in the forecast for tomorrow . . . ARGH ! ! !

Trying to keep on this every day and make progress, but the daylight is getting shorter and shorter . . .
But got a bunch of stuff done this week . . . and today ( tonight . . . )

Got the doorway and header all set up and in place . . .

sm_shop1117.jpg

Then got the remainder of the fire stops in the end piece of the wall . . .

sm_shop1118.jpg

All done, with the exception of needing a 2nd header across the top of this whole wall . . .

sm_shop1119.jpg

Tried a different view, but the 2nd header has now been installed . . .

sm_shop1120.jpg

With the rain in the forecast for tomorrow, they delivered the trusses today . . . at my request . . .
Showing up at the build site and ready to drop them off . . .

sm_shop1121.jpg

But in usual "mad scientist" fashion . . . things don't always go as planned ( he was quite pissed )

sm_shop1122.jpg

But we just grabbed them all and restacked them on 6x6 timbers so they're not sitting on the ground . . .

sm_shop1123.jpg

The fall caused a minor mishap and a minor injury to one of the trusses and the metal straps . . .
Decided this will be the first one to go up, so it's right next to the wall and I can tie it into the wall for additional support

sm_shop1124.jpg

and as the light is fading in the day . . . the first floor truss has been "muscled" up into place on the walls . . .
And believe it or not . . . it was all done alone ( again ) . . .

sm_shop1125.jpg

One down and only 25 more to go . . . these will be 2' on center . . . Looking forward to some good things this weekend !

sm_shop1126.jpg

Pretty exciting as this project is starting to make some great headway and progress . . . finally . . .
Seemed like I was in "foundation purgatory" for the last year and things were moving along so slowly ( no really )
But things did not seem to be making BIG jumps . . . like they are now . . .

This first one was a bit of a bear on the far side . . . might need to get a better pic to show you the reason . . .

Even though this one was "muscled" up into place, probably should break out the forklift and make life easier
( and probably safer for me too ) . . .
