Flowmasters have been very annoying lately.

I am still considering adding a second set of mufflers as you say. Since I already have Flowmasters with all their baffles and everything inside the case (and I have no idea how well they even perform) I was thinking about adding in a set of 3" straight through mufflers such as Dynomax in front of the Flowmasters to quite it down even more. That would not affect performance and it would quite it down but I don't know how much or what it would sound like after that. I don't really need loud. To me the good sound comes from having a very healthy motor making 540 hp and I don't even like loud anymore. Quite is cool too as long as the motor is not weak. As you mention, I could also fit some bullet type mufflers as well. It does sound very interesting to put some bullet type mufflers in the tailpipes just after coming down from over the rear end. I tried getting more input on this idea a few months ago but the thread died without even one hit I think. My idea came from the 66 Hemi GTX Silver Bullet which uses 4 Cadillac mufflers. One day I will blow a few hundred on different mufflers and try a few different combos out until I find that perfect sound. I really like the Flowmasters with their metallic type sound, but I really like whatever mufflers I have heard that have a deep bass type rumble (I think just a perforated tube type muffler with insulation packed into the case like a Dynomax). I need to get to a car show and wait till I find something that has the sound I like and take note of what muffler they say they are running. Until I insulate my car I am just wasting my money.
 
How about some Magnaflow 4" round mufflers used as resonators out back? That might help, and still have a nice sound...

That's funny you just said that. Me and Meep Meep were just discussing the exact same solution in the other thread about wanting to quite my car before moving to a new apartment complex. Meep Meep says that would work very well, and I think it is one of the best options so far.
 
Lord have Mercy. Anyway, just looked at rules for those limited late model and open wheel modified I like the sound of so much and they run a Schoenfeld #112535 muffler mandatory. Basically, they use 350ci Chevy motors that make either 330 hp or 400 hp depending on the weight of car. So, those mufflers on a 440ci motor making 543 hp would be way to loud. Whoa!! Nevermind what I said about these mufflers not being loud. My memory can suck sometimes. I just got back from East Bay Raceway and they are extremely loud. They just don't have the tingy flowmaster sound. They are deep and aggressive, and when they get on the gas they are loud. Much louder than my flowmasters.
 
Drop the pipe size .25" after the muffler. From what I've heard this is what Flowmaster recommends, and several guys on the Slant 6 forum have done it w/ good results.
 
I recently replaced my 3" Flowmaster D-50s with Duynomax Ultraflows. I like the sound change(tone and volume) but now I have an anoying resonance at 3200-3500 rpm. Not sure how to track it down either. It sounds like it is in the exhaust system and not an external vibration. I installed an H pipe at the same time.
