Gene Winfield

He is living at an assisted care facility in Atascadero, near me. Went to a benefit car show for him last fall. Awesome turn out.

That's too bad, he sure was involved in it a long time. I often marvelled he has made it this far after all the lacquer and lead fumes he's ingested over the decades.

Gene has had a good long run so far. He has achieved a lot of recognition and respect in his long life. He used to come with George Barris and gang to Steve Plunkett's annual Fleetwood Cruise-In in London, Ontario. He always enjoyed the people and cars there. I pray for his comfort in his final days. Sorry to hear it.

WE love ya' Gene, in a none sexual way
you are an ICON, your name will live in the car culture 'for centuries'

He was still doing 'chops & fades' up to the time the Dr.'s diagnosed him
he in his 90's
I had been to his shop in high desert several times in my travels
if I was near I'd stop, look & sometime even chat
he'd walk around his outside yard/lot show some of his creations
I seen many times & still saw something new every time

Used to see him at the old org. Oakland "Roadster Show" every year,
he is a celebrity, great down to earth guy

I hope it's not too painful & you have a good exit, of this life
you are a great man, you deserve that much...

Terminal Cancer, especially at his age is tough...
He's dealt with tough, his whole life...

I met Gene at Bonneville when I was right out of high school. He was repacking the wheel bearings on his trailer. I came up from behind and offered to do that for him, I had no idea who it was. I mean I knew who Gene was, I just had no idea that that was him at the time! I just saw an old guy down on the ground and offered to help. This was over 20 years ago. Anyway, Gene was great. He let me help out on his pit crew, showed me some neat flathead stuff, and was just generally a great guy. Even waved a big huge comical wave in town when he passed by me and my dad at the gas station. He's a great guy, not all of the legends are friendly and down to earth. I probably wasn't the only kid Dick Landy told to kick rocks...
