But think about the patina!

Wont somebody think of the patina?!?!

Our Texas weather is like FJB, unpredictable, and confusing as heck. Last two days have been too cold for me to want to work on it. But tomorrow will be warm, followed by crappy weather, followed by a nice weekend. I’ll get back on it tomorrow, and hopefully by the weekend it’s out, and I can get to the fun stuff

I was looking at headmans, they’re not as pricey, but they are smaller 1 3/4 tube. I don’t know if that’s too small, and of course the big question their fit.

Dougs come well recommended, but 2” tubes seems awfully big.
I put Doug’s 452s in mine. The fit and finish was top notch.

Ah, that’s for temporary painted headers. I know it adds costs but the ceramic coating seems worth the extra money to me. Unless a local company can do ceramic coating cheaper then what the header companies sell theirs for.
Plus the coated ones are way cooler. Mine idle at about 350f using my laser thermometer

Alright, back it. Taking the nut and various clips off. I’m having problems getting the z bar off though, I can’t work with my hands above my head for very long.

First picture. That wire clip fits down into the bushing inside the tube. Pull the clip/s out. Then pull the outside ball into it and should be able to get it out.

Back to the headers. A fairly mild 440 will be very happy with 1 7/8" tubes. A more race 440 will want 2" tubes. My TTI 2" fit very well in my '66 Satellite. I've read that Doug's do well also. Good luck.

Ok, so it looks like to get the z bar out, I just undo the nut at the frame rail, a clip, and it comes off. Looking at the diagram, I do vaguely remember that when I put it all together. I’ll find out tomorrow

Yup. Factory service manual sure is a handy thing sometimes...

Also yup.

Yes, I have all the clips, the problem I’m having is the pulling part because of my back.

My new plan is to unbolt the stud from the block, hopefully that works

I hear you on the back issues. The damaged/bulging disc in the back of my neck has been pinching down on
the main nerve trunk lines that go down both arms for years now and working over shoulder height with my
hands is seriously painful.
Sounds like you a bit and I'm sorry you suffer that too.

Oh - you might find the other ball for the z-bar on the bellhousing, actually. :)
Seriously though, if you pull the "cotter" u-shaped pin thingy like others have said and then grab the bar with
something like a pair of vice grips and try to move it laterally back and forth, you'll find it plops right off the
bellhousing pivot ball (if you have the other end unbolted and lifted up off the frame mount, that is).

Yep, I have 5 of them pinching nerves, neck, mid back, and base, and they cause all kinds of problems. I have very weak hands, and it’s hard to do things above my head. Makes my hobby I enjoy so much very difficult.

I removed the nut on the frame rail, the clips on the pedal and clutch, and the u shaped cotter pin, and I tried prying with various tools, moving back and forth, all of it, I just couldn’t get enough strength pop it off. So I’m going to try taking off the stud on the bell housing.

Did you take the z-bar end at the frame actually up off the bracket welded to the frame?
Loosen that nut substantially (but don't take it all the way off, you don't need to), then pick the whole
arm up out of the bracket - it'll pop up. Get it clear of the bracket/frame...

That will release the tension and the other end at the bellhousing should come right to you at that point.

Oh yeah - sciatica. Big-time. Fire down the legs!
I'm actually on long-term prescription Gabapentin for that; it helps some, not all.
I find more relief with it if I can do the "swivel hips" movement (like the chiropractor does)
both ways and get that disc to "pop" - takes tension off the nerve root if I get lucky.
Sciatica will make you hate life, man.

I actually took the nut completely off, I tried picking the bar up like that, but I was a little worried about breaking something
