headers glowing red help

Of for crying out loud. It's not uneven fuel distribution. It's not the motor runnin hot. It's not the cam degreed in or not. It's not aliens from another planet. It simply out of tune. It's simply lean for one reason or another or both. Timing and carburetor tune. It's really that simple.

sometimes when people go like it maybe the cams not degreed in or get an efi to fix something like the glowing headers problem...... for someone whos completly new to this its piss.......after i read that i was hoping someone would give me some advise which dintt involve taking out the engine or 600+$(like mr rusty rad:)just sayin

here a video of the start up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC_WfiFR2B4&feature=youtu.be

its only about 8 mins later we saw the heads going red so no vid of that

Looks like you got a pretty nice shop environment there. and you're asking on a message board ?

I agree with Ratrod, check timing

Did you throw a timing light on it when you were breaking the cam in? I usually start it up and get to around 2000 rpm and then set the timing at 32* full advance and let her run.

Glowing headers durnig breakin is common. Thats why the headers companies say not to use coated headers.
Break her in. Change the oil and filter. Get her all dailed in. She'll probably be just fine.

...It's not uneven fuel distribution....It simply out of tune. It's simply lean for one reason or another or both...
You are right, it's out of tune, the lean headers glow first. Why do some glow? Because you have unequal style intake runners giving you an uneven fuel/air mixture to the different cylinders.

You are right, it's out of tune, the lean headers glow first. Why do some glow? Because you have to tune the damned thing.

There, I fixed it for you.

I mean really. Comin on here and tellin him it's "uneven fuel distribution" and he needs to "add an injector for each cylinder". Are you frackin serious? You need a stand up routine. All he needs to do is ignore all the BS posts like yours and just tune it. Your advice makes it sound like it's unreachable with what he has and it's not. I got money over 90% of fresh engines headers glow. Most of them are either in daylight or under such good shop light that it can't be seen. It's a common occurance. Why do you think header makers recomend running old headers or manifolds and NOT new ceramic coated headers on breakin? It's because a new engine is out of tune and will overheat the headers with a lean mixture. Fuel injection to cure his problem. If that's how people offer help in Sweden, I think I'll skip it on my next glodetrotting adventure. Geez.

2 & 8 and 3 & 5 run off the same side of the carb on a dual plane manifold like your Weiand. You might have to jet up the carb (after you set the timing) or you might have a small vacuum leak at the carb base. tmm

Is it true? If your engine doesn't start on the first crank(while breakin) that ur gonna wipe a cam lobe? I heard it from some where, so i figured the guru's would be able to answer this.

If you are breaking in a new cam, you want the engine to start right up. The quicker, the better. The more radical the cam is as far as lift and profile, the more likely prolonged cranking will wipe the cam. A few seconds of cranking probably won't hurt the cam, but if the engine doesn't start right away, stop cranking it and figure out why it's not starting. Follow the cam manufacturers instructions to the letter. It's the best way to avoid problems.

update on the car....adjusted the timing a bit and changed the carb setting now the glowing headers are gone ..
but i still get backfire trough the exhaust while de accelerating??if i advance the timing a bit the engine starts revving up.....(this is a tiny bit from where the cars runs now)and if i back it out a tiny bit it bogs down and shuts???

tried adjusting the timing but again it just starts to rev up with a slight bump in timing?

Ease the timing up to where it reacts good, then adjust the idle down. See if that works.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but i would check for a vacumm leak on the carb. or intake, I had the same problem one time and the brake booster hose was off on the back of the carb. it feel off when the engine poped threw the carb. I had the glowing headers and all. Check all the hoses to the intake and carb for leaks.......

i have to agree with rust on this it is just a tuning issue. the engine will rev higher when you bump up the timing thats normal. you do know that if you are running more cam you need more timming right? not sure how much experience you have with all this. as for myself i usualy run a carb from one of my other engines that i know is good i fill the bowls with gas set the timing about 10 btdc the fire it up i set the idle speed up to about 2500 rpm then trim out the timing for about 32 to 35 total without vac advance then let her break in for 20 min or so i run a big fan in front of the rad and keep an eye out for leaks as the engine settles in a bit i often have to ease the idle speed down to keep it at 2500. the important thing is to try and get it fired up asap and not to let it idle down to low you need the revs for good cam brake in the lifters need to rotate and the oil presure need to be good. it can be a bit freaky the first time because it seems like you are beating on it but it is what it needs.

good luck.

update on the the problem....everything is solved now but heres the thing .. i get a whilting sound ..it goes away if i richen out the carb a bit??what could this be??
