I'm new here and need advice with my 505

Solid Plan... Dwanye is a good source of info and parts...

I am going to call Duane tommorow just to touch base after the labor day holiday . Like you said, I need to set up a plan . If I could get to the 600hp range using my block crank and rods for $8000 I would be extremely happy . I guess I am wondering if that price sounds reasonable for my expectations. I don't want to sound like a total fool. At least anymore then I do now.lol

600 hp is easy with 500 inches and Trick Flow 240 heads. You don't want the 270 heads since they are Max Wedge size and would be too big for what you are trying to do. The cam you have might be okay for 600 hp but it is a little on the small side. The 496 in my Coronet made 610 hp with a 239/245 hyd roller so your cam is close. I have no idea what your compression will be with the TF heads and it doesn't sound like anyone else does either. You most likely will need to pull the heads off and measure to find out. Odds are that you'll be fine. You don't need a lot of compression to make 600 hp with the TF240 heads. If I was designing a street motor from scratch I'd shoot for 9.8 compression with a zero deck and a dish and then use a 0.035 or 0.040 MLS gasket. That combo will make power and live on the street. Good luck, sounds like you just need a good local shop to work with.

In case you aren't aware of it AndyF wrote the book on big block Mopar Strokers... listen to him...

I forgot to mention Todd @ http://www.mopartsracing.com/ Marsh Performance. He is a MOPAR man and stocks all kindsa mopar goodies. He is also a dealer for Indy and KB to name a few. I buy most of my parts and all my SUPERPERFORMANCE gaskets from him.

He also has a tent with COLD water in Chrysler Carlisle:lol::thumbsup:

What type of rpm range is your power at . I mean what is your redline do you have ? every book I read and website I read tells different information I've always heard a 500 or similar size motor would choke out with 240tfs at high-end? What cfm carb and type is on your Coronet? Compression ? I'm impressed!how does she move in the quarter mile ?

I have to say I have read many mauals and tech books but i can't say enough positive things about how to build max performance MOPARS by Andy Finkbeiner . !!! Top notch read. Thanks for telling me

I just read through this thread
horsepower is in the heads
changing compression does not gain you much
you can build HP and Torque with the heads,
headers should be fine
your cam may be fine
do one thing at a time
just do the heads, select springs- beehive, duals, single with dampner
specify valve stem seals- viton
get the head flows also at .050
check and see if the intake face was cut on the heads or if intake manifold was ruined by milling it
do not port the new heads till you check out the intake manifold situation
you can port later- porter quality and "CNC" quality varies widely so do some research and monitor this and other sites the TF are too new for mods to be standard operating procedure yet
then retest
btw what's your cranking compression now?
do not worry about chocking at the top end unless you are running a heads up class in a strip only build/ do not worry about max lift flow- your motor will spend very little time at the revs for either of those scenarios to matter
you want heads that flow at near their max flow at as low a lift as possible
if you have roller tip rockers do you have B3's kit
do not buy roller tip rockers without it
pushrods are long so large dia pushrods help so clearance the heads for them
(do the block later as I would not tear into it at this time)
I would have recommend iron rockers and a solid cam with edm lifters- but you have a HR already-
Mike jones has the best HR profiles if you later find a need to change

The torque peak on my 496 is at 4800 rpm, power peak is at 5800. Numbers are 630 torque and 610 power. Compression is less than 10:1. I don't have a carb, I use a Holley Sniper fuel injection setup. Yes the 240 heads will limit the top end power on a 500 inch engine but so what. You're building a street engine right? Not a race engine? If you're building a street engine then don't worry about power at high rpm, build it for where you'll use it.

I just finished a 400/512 build with the TF 240s running just over 10.5 compression on 91 pump gas with no problems. I have a 180f t stat, aluminum rad, aluminum water pump housing and aluminum high flow water pump and it runs cool as a cucumber. It made 619hp at 5500 and 636lbs at 4200-4400. I went with the 240s because I wanted to run a duel plane intake (for stock hood clearance) and stock location exhaust ports. I believe it's still the best flowing head for the stock port configuration.

What andyf said
he wrote the book
do not build a race engine for the street
and besides it will not last
