Monroe's 70 GTX

Cleaned up the ac/heater control unit. Had to purchase another switch unit as the original was falling apart and the vacuum ports on the rear were'nt in very good shape. All ready to go back in and hook up.

I got the slide decals from Performance Car Graphics.

Looking good Monroe. Have you done anything with the AM 8 track in the background

Hi Tallhair. I took the face off and cleaned up the window and it came up allright. Radio works but the tape player wasn't when I got it. I put on a new belt and cleaned it up a bit inside and that got it working again. Only problem is I can't seem to adjust the play speed. At the moment it sounds like the chipmunks on speed. :laughing9: Trying to find someone local who knows something about these things and isn't too bad on price. Unless you know of an adjustment inside somewhere?

For your 8-track, the rubber pinch roller may have dried out and gotten hard, not providing traction to regulate the speed.

Thanks for the tip Monroe. Unfortunately I don't know what to suggest but Photon's idea sounds logical

Thanks Photon, I'll check that out when i get the chance. :VB toast:

controls look great

X2 What did you do for the letters to make them so clean? did you paint them also?
I was gonna paint them but they're not engraved lettering. Probably originally done with a stencil. Since my hands not that steady, I went with the lettering decals from Performance Car Graphics. Don't know if they'll last but they look ok at the moment. I painted the lettering on the brake handle, but that was easy because it was engraved. I could fill the groove up with the paint brush and wipe the excess off the surface without having to worry about wiping away the actual lettering. :VB toast:

Monroe, there're several things you can do to clean that pinch roller in your 8 track.... try cleaning it with alcohol first, then with lighter fluid (Naphtha). If that doesn't work, they used to make a platen cleaner for typewriters (IF you can find it nowadays, it was for cleaning the big rubber roller that moved the paper and the two rollers on the hold down bar) If none of these work, your last best bet would be to use lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner will clean, soften and swell the roller, but the swelling will go down after a day or two. I use it quite a bit for weatherstripping that is otherwise in good shape, but has paint on it or is too stiff to use until it's cleaned up.

Looking better and better every day :)

Good idea to try cleaning the pinch roller that would likely be difficult to find a replacement for. But...before possibly causing any more damage to the rubber with solvents, I'd use something that is specifically meant for rubber.

I use Rubber Renue on belts and rollers for my home stereo components. It's available at most electronic supply houses, and I've seen it listed on Amazon.

Also good for softening up other rubber parts on your car, such as hardened boots or seals. It does have a strong smell though.

Thanks for the tips on getting the 8 track going again guys. Hopefully the roller is in good enough nick to get back into the right condition. I'll let you know how it turns out. :VB toast:

Put in the heater controls and rear defog switch but forgot to take a photo. I'll grab one for next time. Still haven't had a look at the pinch rollers on the 8 track yet guys but I will soon. Dropped in the engine and gearbox over the weekend so finally starting to take shape. Also clears a **** load of room out of my garage. Good to have things sitting in the car for a change rather than all around it. :icon_super:
