My 1967 Belvedere Convertible Plans and Restoration (aka - Mad Scientist Build)

Just a quick note to explain my earlier use of a nickname for you brother .. I've always liked the Star Trek series' (well most of them) and movies .. especially the original episode about Khan and the movie the Wrath of Khan.

So it was short for conv67bdere

Khan = con

And I'll think of your work on the car as the "Wrath of Khan "

Khan was superhuman and all and you're having to do some superhuman work out in the cold and desolate botany bay of a garage you have to work in and utilize inventive mental tactics and strategery to resurrect and remold the old Bdere in your vision of the perfect future craft and maybe exercise some demons and take out some revenge of sorts in the process.

All I know is I'm watching it happen and will continue ...

Only a little progress tonight . . . had some running around . . .

Before I got back to the car to get some stuff done, I stopped at my neighbors shop and bought a large sheet of 18 guage steel from him - that 16 guage sheet that I got was so stiff, it was almost unmanageable . . . it'll work great for rocker replacement metal - strong as all get out ! !

So I'll need to cut out some new pieces - that'll be easy - already got the form in the 16 guage piece.

Did get a bit of swiss cheese fixed under the rear seat that was egging me on - so I got rid of it.
It was an overlapped set of pieces with a trough in it to probably drain water ( if it should get in there ) - that was fun ! !

sm_swisscheeseless.jpg

Then walking back from lunch I saw this Dodge Avenger in the parking lot and the color just JUMPED out at me . . . WOW ! ! !
Hummmm . . . wondering if I've just found the color for the Belvedere ? ! ? ! ? ! ? !

sm_carcolor.jpg

Ugh . . . forgot to get pics of the wheel flares on the old and new panels . . . really would like more flare on the car . . .

That color on that avenger is one of my favorites and I thought about that color for my car...it is however the color my next truck will be ordered in when/if I can afford one.

Btw I second the statement about fbbo being the best site on the net. Ive been on a few others and nobody has the knowledge and hospitality that we have here. As he said thanks fbbo

I don't think your trying, i think your doing, and doing great! and with that we all learn a lot.. I wish i could get things in order where i could get a plan down and get some work done each day, heck even every other day lol.. I have been out in the garage today getting a little done but have an hour left before our Gabby girl gets home from school, i had to come back in to fill the stove up being its 10 degrees without that wind blowing and thought id check and see who else is doing what, couldn't help it,, i sure do love that color you may be thinking of...

Great song 67, I'm sorry "Khan". Dammit Tallhair, that movie gave me nightmares when my dad took me to see it as a little one "worms in the ears" errrh. I agree, your doing a little more than trying and with your plans and that color (I'm really liking) there is know doubt that car will make everyone envious. Don't kid yourself, you got skills.

Sorry 747 about the childhood dreams .. the things that scared me when I was a kid was Night Gallery .. the voodoo doll episode specifically LOL

Nice update and great work as usual Khan !!! I'm sure that color will like great on your steed if you choose to go with it but on the bright side you don't have to make that decision for quite a while

Ya never know .. let your inner Khan out and find out how it goes over with your lady .. she may like it :)

Got parts . . .

Came home for lunch to let the puppy dog out and had the fortune of a box of parts sitting on the front porch !

Got my last parts as follows:

sm_gotparts.jpg

Got my flywheel bolts, pedals, they threw in the bolt, and the rubber pads for the pedals. NOW, I feel like an idiot . . . the pedals are the same, but this time in the picture you can clearly see the white plastic bushings in the pedal holes . . . I did not see them on the last set - and I checked tonight - they're there ! ! ( sigh )

Now, pulling out the bushings is very close to the 1/2 hole that I need - just may need to run a reamer through it and clear it out to make it work ! ! ! I'll send one of the sets back . . . the 3/8 bolt is not suppose to be a standard bolt, and the rest of the holes in my brackets are 1/2 - might just send it back too. But, now I think I've got a plan to get the pedal assembly put together and functioning. ( YAY )

This is what I believe I need:

CP-ES.jpg

Now I can make it happen . . . order the bolt ( kingpin ) whatever it's called . . . and I'm on my way ! !

Glad they followed up and finally got you the rest of your parts!

Now have you decided on the K-member and motor mount setup? Are we going modern coil over with A arms or sticking with the hammer anvil method from 67? :)

I am ready to see some shoe horning! Did I mention that I miss having my car around....I need some car ****

Are the replacement panels up to par ? ? ?

I've been doubting myself and the replacement panels that I got . . . not that I've got a whole lot to choose from for my year Mopar . . .

And I've been meaning to take a good look at them side by side and see what I've got . . . got some pics . . .

Here's the comparisons on the new / old panels: the flare on the panel is quite a bit less ( or am I imagining it ? )

sm_flare1.jpgsm_flare2.jpg

Not really sure that the panels really match up ? ? Still trying to examine all the details . . .

sm_flare3.jpgsm_flare4.jpg

The lack of paint on the panel may just be throwing off the eyes ? ?

Success !!!! Way to stick it out brother Khan

Thanks Tallhair . . . nice to have them !

Thanks KB - need to ship one set of pedal back to them . . . at least by June ? ? ( evil grin )

I'm still leaning toward the AlterKtion front end clip . . . anxious to see how USARoadRunners build goes now that he's got his in hand !

I can only imagine . . . but as cold as it's been here, and you've GOT to be much colder . . . don't know how much work could get done ( unless you were planning on just sitting in the car and making motor sounds like the rest of us ( SMILE ) ) LMAO . . .

I know the feeling Ron . . . I keep filling up the fireplace insert with wood and try to keep heat in the house - my wood pile is getting depleted very quickly ! ( ugh )

Dang . . . the temp was almost 10 degrees down here in NC too this morning ? ? ?

Take a cereal box and cut a pattern to match the old ones, that will show you the difference but they sure don't look the same to me. Good luck

That'll work 747Mopar . . . Now, should it be Apple Jacks or Honey Combs ? ? ( grin ) . . . I'll take care of that tomorrow . . . now I'm really curious . . .

Might need to come up with a plan B . . . just replace the rotted out areas - most of the panels are very solid ! ! !

And find a donor car for some really nice fender flares ? ! ? ! ? ! ? ( hee hee hee - the mad scientist is at large ) . . .
