My 1967 Belvedere Convertible Plans and Restoration (aka - Mad Scientist Build)

Looks great! I like how your taking it right to shiny, I would do the Epoxy primer you need to protect it, it wont take long for oxidation to start and cause problems...

going back to your question, just take the two screws out and remove your fender tag. nothing special really, its just a stamped metal tag screwed to the car. I screwed mine to the wall for 2 years while I worked on the car and then came back, cleaned it and painted it while it sat on a piece of cardboard.

And I am with the rest of the guys, you are doing a phenominal job in there...I should have hired you to do mine. I just sanded mine smooth and shot paint over it.

Thanks KB . . . sounds like a great idea - screw it to the wall ! ! ! Works for me.

And thanks for the compliment - helps keep the motivation and the momentum to keep pushing on this journey. I'm really enjoying this, and keep reviewing all the other threads for tips on how to do this process, and do it right. Helps to know that I'm going in the right direction - or the wrong direction so that I can fix it ! ! Got a long way to go to get caught up with your stage of completion - but, that's the way it goes. One day at a time - that's all that I can do.

More paint removal . . .

Well KB . . . like your idea so much that :

And pulled out the tools and attacked the driver side inner fender . . . got a great start on it tonight . . .

Getting closer to getting this whole front clip cleaned up so I can get it in primer . . . looking forward to that . . .

You are doing a fantastic job, looks really clean and your patience doing this is showing as nice as that looks!

Got sidetracked . . . helped daughter with a project

So my daughter is working on a Captain America costume, and I needed to assist her with some of the details - I won't take credit for the painting and broken in look of the shield - she did a great job on it all by herself.

I think the results of the costume look fantastic ! ! !

She sure did do a great job, my boy wants to be a trash can "really".

Looking great! Finished the body and paint on my 67 convertible last summer. Like you, did it all myself. Just a heads up...you are nearing the most time-consuming, patience-testing part of the project: THE PAINT PREP. The hours of sanding, spraying, sanding, more sanding, spraying, sanding....you get the picture. You will sand the fingerprints off your fingers and draw blood in places (ask me how I know :confused3:). In the end, you won't regret it.

In addition to re-building my Mopar, I've got another project that I'm working on for the house. It's a combination of my well house, that has been extended to not only contain the well pump, but it's got additional storage - we always can use more storage ! In addition, I've created this neat little "shallow" storage area . . . and if you look at the picture I'm sure you'll be wondering - why would one make the storage area so shallow ? ?

Here's the picture of this area - as you can see, it's only about 1 foot deep:

Well - it really comes in handy and organizes my stuff so I'm not tripping all over all the time - and all within easy reach:

Storage for all my lawn and garden tools for around the house:

Works very well - just thought I'd share this little idea with the group.

That is so cool. I didn't even know what 1 foot area you were talking about until I saw the open picture. Very cool idea / use of space / organization.

Thanks 1FYNBEL . . . I've been warned about it . . . but I'll keep doing what I'm doing and I'll get it done. So you've got a 67 convertible too . . . I don't see many of them around at all, so I"m anxious to get mine done and on the road. Thanks for the heads up . . . I'm looking forward to it ! !

Thanks TALLHAIR - I needed to do something to keep that stuff organized and easy to reach . . . and was going to put it in the storage area of the carport ( I didn't show a pic of the whole carport - guess I need to do that ) but then it would still be sitting there and in the way - came up with this idea and made it work - LOVE the result ! Thanks for the compliment - very much appreciated ! !

Your daughter did a great job on her Captain America costume!!

RON73 . . . She sure did, she's the artist in the family, wants to get into animation . . . and she's very creative -

The carnage from her work:

- Spray paint all over my wood deck
- Kitchen scissors were used to cut sandpaper
- Silver paint dribbles on my 66 Shoebox ( no big deal - it's next after the Belvedere )
- More than likely more, just haven't found it yet ( sigh )

Oh well . . . it can be cleaned up - and she got her costume completed ! !

Here you go Tallhair . . . additional picture of the carport. The center section is built around my well house, so I just extended it all the way back, added a door, and made it for storage too. The door on the top holds the canoe - easy access for getting to it and storing it. The tools "were" going to go in there, but they would still be out of reach, so that's why it got moved to it's new location.

Still got to get the upper side of the carport poured and ready for car parking:

sm_carport.jpg

In addition, I've run a 50 amp plug in the tool area, accessible from the car side, to be able to plug in the welder and work on projects.

This is still work in progress, but it's getting there.

Thats the coolest car port ive ever seen! Mine looks nothing like that.. I like it!

And that does sound like a mess, but what the heck, we did as much or worse when we were young to! :)

Well, i know i did lol..

The carport . . . part of the reason . . .

The honest truth of the matter, is the carport was started, not only to protect my vehicles, but because the original well house looked like an outhouse sitting at the top of my driveway ( and I got tired of it ).

Here's the start of the process . . .

sm_carportstart.jpg

Then I worked the well house into the design of the carport as follows:

sm_carportnoouthouse.jpg

Now you can see how the outhouse vanished, and the carport replaced it . . .

Alrighty . . . I've got a roller ! ! ! ! ! well, sorta . . .

Finally got this job done and got my casters installed on the Belvedere this morning - now I'll be able to move the car if needed.

Here's what I've got - the rear caters:

sm_castersrear.jpg

And the front casters ( yeah, my rear end is in the way ) . . .

sm_castersfront.jpg

That may help a little - seems to help with more room under the car . . .

Back to finish up frame connectors . . . forgot something . . .

Turns out the the frame connectors from US Cartools needed one additional piece of work to complete them, and I missed it. The connectors come with some reliefs at the bending locations, probably simplifies the bending process. After installation, the reliefs need to be welded up - to make them continuous and probably make them that much stronger too.

So, the reliefs look like this:

sm-fcreliefs.jpg

So I've welded all of the reliefs on both frame connectors ( 12 of them in all )

fc_reliefwelded.jpg

And gone back and done some initial sanding of the welds to clean them up . . . more sanding will be done to blend them in to the rest of the frames.

Watch clearing out some brush in the area in front of my house and found a yellow jacket nest by accident. Not sure where it was. Was being attacked by "something" and kept swatting them away - then moved away from the area to see if they'd leave me alone. That's when one of those buggers bit me on the stomach - and looking down at my shirt and pants, there were about 20-30 of them on me "trying" to sting me. Thank goodness they couldn't get through my jeans or double shirts that I was wearing ( or they luckily picked the sports where I had room to spare ). Let the swatting begin - they would not go away, so I grabbed them, one at a time with my leather gloved and terminated them. Took about 10-15 minutes till they were all gone - and more showed up as I was clearing the ones that had already landed on me. Argh ! ! ! Luckily, the ends result was only one sting - but on my stomach - and it's bright red.

Boy those little buggers are bad news ! !

You're lucky more of them didn't sting ya. I've found my share of nest also. Wasp, Hornets, Bee's. I try and find their nest/hive, then wait till night when it is cooler and they are all in for the night, Then...........BAM!!!!!!!!!!!! get the RAID spray out. Did that with a hornet's nest with about 150 +/- hornets.

Those casters look like they will for sure make moving your car around easier. What's the weight rating? just curious. I could've used something like those before I put the motor in mine.

Yes, very lucky. Got stung about 25 times years ago, worried the next one could be "really bad".

I'll have to go check them, not sure they say on them . . . but I'd have to guess they're more than 1000 pounds rating - they're pretty stout ! ! And HEAVY ! ! !

Wow the yellow jackets luckily didn't rip you a new one.

Good looking weld on those connectors...somebody is learning!
