My 1969 Ivy Green Roadrunner 383 4 speed

Been raining ever since I got her home...LOL Dont want to uncover it, I dont think its seen water in 20 years.
Snapped these real quick before I unloaded all the goodies from it and get it cleaned up a bit.

I'll be taking more detailed pics of course but look at the package tray area.. its pristine. Few patches and some 1/4 skins and she is ready to fly :)

disclaimer:
havent taken down one set of lights...LOL.. keeps raining when I have time to do it and I dont want to put them away wet.

Net is a home mades batting cage I set up for my kid to practice his swing during the winter layoff.. he loves baseball.. was a cheap net from ebag.. drapped it off the garage door and weight the bottom with a 2x4 .. works great for tee work and soft pitch with wiffle balls and tennis balls. It will stop the baseball to but we dont press our luck..LOL

neighbor put of for sale sign after seeing my next projetc get dropped off...LOL j/k

I wish I could get rid of my neighbor that easy. Nice hardtop . let the fun begin

Some neighbors just don't appreciate great looking machines when they go by!

OK... big choice here: Paint.. single stage or clear coat?
I can get Omni for about 180 gallon w/hardener delivered

I'm hesistant to do a 2 stage for a couple reasons.
1... I dont like gloss I want deep deep color
2... I such at spraying clear coat
3... I want it to be as OEM as possible

Omni good choice? Isnt that what you used Will?

Nothing wrong with omni but a gallon will never be enough if doing the trunk and underhood. We used 2 full gallons of color around 3 gallons of sprayable on my GTX and barely had enough.Omni is thin so you dont end up with as much sprayable material as you would with say PPG.For me though the Omni QQ1 was a 1/3 of the cost of PPG per gallon so it was still less expensive going that route.I went the B/C on mine. You could go that route also just dont polish it if you can lay the clear on without runs.If i know Will i would say he went with PPG.

Some guys will tell you the Omni wont hold up to the UV rays but how often do these cars really sit out side when not driven.

Getting Started

Well its time to get started.... going to take it slow and easy on this one

P1010001.jpgP1010002.jpg

Starting with the problem areas on the firewall and drivers side floor and then will work outward to the harder tasks.

Its 10:30 am .. going to see how much I can get done today in a relaxed way.. :)

Supposed to be in the 80's and sunny and I'm in the driveway this time with no tent. Not sure how I cam going to paint hey but I'll figure it out I guess....hahahahaha

glad to see another road runner build underway, now that NorthernDave and Prop are bout done with their's :hello2:

I agree Basket. It's been fun fella's, but i'm passing the torch till next resurrection.....

Good luck with the lower/side firewall Chris.....Time for that Rot to go.

Chris, glad to see you have started on it now. This build will be a special one for me. I'll also tell the wife that you've started on it. She will be just as excited.

One sand blaster down...LOL one of those hand held units.. couldn't take the sand I used ... broke in 1 hr...hahahahaha hot out there in the sun too but I got a good solid 5 hrs in on it I think.... pics to come... got some more blasting to do and then its welding time as far as the drivers side goes :)

made some decent progress with the cutting wheel today

100_5602.jpg

This actually works decent but you are restricted to 90 grit or higher and its $114 for a 50# bag. I set plastic down to catch some of it to re-use after I screen it.

100_5612.jpg

The bad floor remnants and the 3" wheel

100_5603.jpg

cleaned it up a bit and started cutting out the bad spots

100_5604.jpg

100_5605.jpg

used poster board paper to make a template for the floor section

100_5606.jpg

cut it out and started to fit it into place

100_5607.jpg

100_5613.jpg

had to trim it a few times

100_5614.jpg

All I got done today.. tomorrow I hope to finish with the templates and patches fitted and hope to do some welding as well as more media blasting on the interior

Way to hit the ground running 99ss. From the pics she looks solid and it looks like it's going to be a great project. Is it an original 4 speed car? I'm glad you clarified that baseball net over the garage opening. I was going to ask if it was there to hold all the stuff you got from Roadrunnerman. :eusa_dance:

Hold on just a minute Will .. you're not done yet! Not til the movie is cut and printed and showing on a computer screen near you or rather all of us !! :)

anywhere the metal was think or had a rust hole I cut out. My goal is to keep as much original sheet-metal on this car as possible. Instead of doing the whole floor.... 70% of its good, I did patches. The 1/4 skins wont be patched though but its a while before I get to them. You can see in some of the pictures I left some rusty metal... this is so I can cut my templates and not have to guess later...LOL... especially on the firewall where the steering column passes through. Got some MSD wires to make and ship this am and then I'm hitting it hard today !

One lesson learned from the last one applied here... No propane heat !.. it oxidizes the metal instantly.. This is why no tent and I didn't get it started until summer

BigBlock61 Yes it is an original 4-speed car. Everything I sent to Chris is original to the car.

Chris, I was looking for some parts for my RR and came across another box and guess what I found? The original radio with 8-track player. I looked it over and it is in pretty good shape. It wouldn't surprise me if you hooked it up and slip in an 8-track and listen to some Three Dog Night tunes. LOL. I can send it to you the next time I get home.

Good luck with the Bird project...

Hey how much do these car weigh without the engine and trans? How much if I drop the K-frame? how heavy the k-frame?
These questions and many more/.. stay tuned... how do I build a crude rotisserie ?

Can I lay it on its side somehow? I want to access the underneath easier ?

I've seen a german tool/model that is a cradle that's pretty neat and not too expensive .. it attaches to the bottom of the car instead of the ends so would be suited for someone with a short garage. It looks like a big "C". You can rotate the car up to get at the underside. Perhaps someone recalls it and has it linked. There was another model that has two large rings that rotate the car with the car inside the rings instead of attaching to the ends of the vehicle also, IIR it was more expensive that the German model but looked effective. It was a automotive technical school guy that was advertising it a while back on FBBO.

Kind of like this
