Cleaned up some of the roof to quarterpanel joints.The old welds stick up above the roof line. I wondered why the side panel was so uneven with the roof
Hey Coronet14, longtime reader, first time poster for your build- I've got a '71 Coronet and also stripping the vinyl roof... what are you using to get rid of the vinyl top glue and bondo between the seams? Chemical, sander, both?
Mine won't be nearly as nice as yours will be, but please know you're my inspiration to get my four door done! (and if you're looking to cut out that patch panel, I would definitely be interested in buying it- my quarters are rotten)
Thanks I got an electric orbital sander and some sanding discs. I use 80 grit disc then when I get down to bare metal I use a sanding block with 120 to 400 grit to help remove some of the deep scratches. Takes a while I'm doing a small section at a time. Also using a wire wheel that fits on my 4 and a half inch grinder. Once I get a section down to bare metal I wipe down the surface with laquer thinner til the surface is clean. I wipe it down with tack cloth then prime. I If using an electric sander on the roof don't push too hard on the sander you will dent the roof. Hearing protection and dust mask is a must. As for the body filler in the seams I used a wood chisel and just tapped the filler out with the chisel and hammer then ran the wire wheel over the metal to clean it up. The quarter panel I'm gonna fix. That patch panel is seperating at the door opening and the rivets are comming throught the body filler. I haven't worked on the car in a couple of weeks. Due to flare ups with my medical issues. Hopeing to get bact to it this week
Well I started back on the old car today. Figured out the overflow bracket and bottle gets mounted. I ran the long hose down the side of the radiator through the hole at the bottom of the support. I know that the short hose goes from the radiator nect to the overflow tank lid but there is no hose to go into the bottle from the lid. Do I have to get a different hose. The kit only came with enough hose to go to the outside of lid to the radiator and from the lid to the hole in the bottom of rad support.
great project! Dad was friends with the man that owned the local Dodge dealership in the late '60s /early '70s, and I remember these cars sitting on his showroom. Keep up the great work.
I hope im not wrong and im going by about the same outfit on my 73 and it sounds like the same deal, Im sure you could get another short one to put in there, mine gos close to the bottom inside the over flow tank but truthfully i don't know if someone may have made it, or its original to the car, im sure someone will show up and clear this up for you... Ive found i have a lot of self repair jobs done but so far i cant complain!
The old overflow tank was mounted on a piece of wood and set on the battery tray. I may get a another piece of hose and run it from the filler neck through the overflow lid and into the bottle.
Well I've figured out that the long hose goes from the radiator neck through the overflow bottle lid and inside the bottle. The short line goes down the side of the radiator through the bottom radiator support hole and the other end goes to the lid. Due to inside diameter of the shorter hose it can only push onto the smaller fitting on the bottle lid. But way too short to reach down the side of the radiator. I would have thought that since these kits are marked correct length hoses that when I ordered it, it would be correct.
Got the overflow tank bracked and bottle mounted. Had to remove the two clips on the side of the radiator that attach the overflow hose to the side of radiator. I will run the hose against the bracket when the longer one gets here. After I bolted it up I tried to put the battery tray in and it wouldn't fit. Took bottle off the bracket and got the tray finally in. Then pushed the bottle down into the bracket. Had to bend the edge of the tray alittle bit. Finally got it all to fit. Battery rubs a bit on the upper bolt hole tab and the ribs on the side of the radiator dosen't allow the bracket to totally sit flat against side of radiator. Not exactly a direct fit but it will work Battery won't hang over the tray anymore.
Compared to your old overflow setup, the difference is like night and day. It's got the factory look now like it's been there all it's life. Great job!
Took car to show today. Lots of questions about car. I was surprised so many people checked my car out. Only 3 Mopars and a AMX. Rest were Ford and GM and one Studabaker Even had a guy tell me that he had one in the 70's same color. Car got it's first Dash Plaque
