A used "low milage" 85 S-10 4x4, with a 2.8ltr 60* v6 5 speed (POS)
I got it from one of the dealerships (Toyota) I worked at/for

I thought I got it dirt cheap
(below wholesale prices, they just wanted it gone, it was going to go
to an auction they sold a lot of cars/trucks at)
it ran good at the time I bought it, no blowby, started easily
drove nice, decent performance for a POS S-10,
had nice wheels & new tires
good paint (fugly tan) no rust or big chips, nice clean interior/no rips or cracks
I figured I'd flip it & make a few bucks
to help pay for racecar parts etc.
Or maybe put it in storage at the warehouse I had back then
to let one of my girls drive it, or the oldest boy (my nephew) drive it
(he wanted nothing to do with it)
My girls later they were into 4x4s (Toyotas SR5s not S-10s)
it was like (IIRC) 1992-93-ish, girls were way too young still,
and didn't have a license even yet

Anyway,
I drove it a few times a few miles here & there
just to keep the battery up & see if anything needed fixing
like the 3rd-4th time, I drove it, started hearing a faint knock,
then it started overheating & the knock got louder the next time
POS 60* v6 motor was toast,
when I drained the engine oil 'someone' put, like 90wt oil in it
probably to cover up the knocking, get one over on the dealership...
I never drove it long enough to get hot...
I ended up spending more on rebuilding the POS motor
then I paid for the truck...

Put it on Craigslist the day after getting it running again
broke even maybe, after all was said & done, with the rebuilt motor
& new clutch etc.

found out the GM 2.8 ltr 60* v6, after the fact, was prone to spin bearings
whomever the org. owner was, drove it hard (it only had like 40k miles)
the truck didn't look like it was abused, looked pretty damn good/clean
no leaks, no sign of any repairs to speak of...
they got one over on the dealership (trade-in) & me after the fact

I also had an 84 S-10 Blazer 4x4 2.8ltr 60* v6 auto, I got the same way
and never had any issues with
it was a run-around rig for my shop/warehouse,
after the engine crap in the 85 truck,
seeing the insides of the engine in the 4x4 Truck,
I sold it also right away after that too...

I don’t have a lot of regrets that affected me long term.
I’ve bought food that gave me trouble.

or the cheap *** clubs were fitted right/close to what you truly needed
or used to, for you already
or you had already bad swing habits, you'er 'used to'
with the old improper fitted clubs

90 (especially in 9 holes ) is nothing to brag about sorry
playing golf & hitting balls in a fitting 'is a world different'
some people will never do better, no matter the clubs either or price range
a lot of it is 'bad course management' 9 times out of 10
it's 'the Indian', not 'the arrow'

everyone, I can think of
that I've fitted for custom clubs, I've done hundreds
have improved their game,
I like to (or used to don't do much of it now) watch people play a few holes
before I do fittings too, see how they swing when actually playing
not just hitting off a mat or simulator
some took a bit to improve too, no matter the club changes
some/most were 'it was immediate' improvement
in striking the ball,
& I am fortunate to have many 'good golfers', as clients/former clients
Putting & short game is where you make up strokes
100 yards & in, ball striking helps too, fitted irons help that
Usually most of the people 'that needed more or less lie-angle',
sometimes a bit less loft or more loft in rare cases too
(like me to fit gaps in-between irons)
club/irons bent up or down (when able to, some clubs can't be bent),
every club/irons especially, in the bag & puters too
many didn't need new clubs
usually using a striking board on the ground, with impact tape
with the set of clubs to be used
some were small changes
some were huge swings/differences

*I have bags & a closet full of high-dollar Name Brand "proprietary" **** that was not/never truly fitted properly
the person 'actually knowing' what you truly need, a real professional fitting you

been there done that

I have plenty of custom clubs if anyone is interested,

Oh no my typical 86-90 is for 18 holes...but I absolutely agree that it's more "Operator Error" than the equipment... I'm a hack, no question....30+ years of swinging at some of the finest courses in the country and I've managed to break into the 70s only once (Fort Washington CC in Fresno--fairly nice place)...
I guess I could amend my original post to say the "Things I shouldn't have bought" were shoes, gloves, balls, countless greens fees, etc etc....fuckkin golf!! I've never spent so much money to be so miserable!!

Seemingly the simplest game (in theory)
a lil' white ball 'sitting still' on a tee or on the ground etc.
game of opposites 'sometimes' hitting/striking down on it
('sweeping it' with a Driver on a tee)
to make it climb up the club (grooves) for spin
it goes 'thataway', down the fairway & makes it 'on the green'
& 'in the hole' preferably
in the least amount of strokes possible
that may be the hardest to master (in reality)

'F--k', I've bought quite a few clubs/drivers 'I wish I didn't'
over the many years thousands of dollars worth over the years,
$300 at a pop or 'or more' for the components, especially special shafts/grips
just to get a few more yards, experimenting, some good some not so good

Soloflex (circa 1985-ish).

It made a wonderful rack for my collared shirts while they awaited ironing. That along with the fact that I saved 2 brothers, 1 friend and a cousin a combined $4,800.00 by talking them each out of buying their own made it a decent purchase .... I guess?
Funny, that heavy POS always seemed to find its way back to my house!
