Update,
I figured I should replace all the fuel hoses - no sense in taking any chances, I cant remember how old they are. I also need to build the external pickup hose.
Also , I started disassembling the short block and cleaning everything for final assembly. I still need to do some block oiling mods then clean & prep the block for assembly. Ordered oil pan gasket, AN fittings, head bolts & fuel filter.
Update,
Originally I decided not to do any block oiling system modifications on this engine. I have now reconsidered, so I started reaming out the main oil feed passages (from lifter galley) to 9/32. I will also install a restrictor (drilled freeze plug) in the drivers side lifter galley as opposed to totally blocking it.
I inserted this steel 3/8 rod in the lifter galley to protect it from the reamer (just in case) turns out It wasn't needed and ended up causing the passages to clog up with iron shavings. You live and you learn I guess.
After I finished the modifications to the main bearing oil feeds and studied the oiling system closer I've come to the conclusion that reaming the #1 & #5 main feeds might be unnecessary. They only oil 1 main brg & 1 rod brg, While #2,3&4 oil 1 main brg & 2 rod brg's each. Anybody want to chime in?
Now it's time to set a date for assembly of the short block - Yay!
While I'm waiting on good weather to start the engine assembly I have decided to do some more detailing of the car. The car has more paint staining around the side trim and emblems like what was on the rear. I bought some nice emblems from a fellow FBBO member and cleaned and painted them.
These are the original untouched scripts and emblems on the right front fender, note the stain on the paint just above the side trim. The whole car is like this. -
Here you can see the staining that was around the emblems -
Here are some comparison pics between the old & refurbished emblems - not the best quality pics but they are much better looking than the originals emblems.
Update -
I got my valve covers back from my friend Mark, he really tricked them out. I bought these covers off of Facebook marketplace, I've never seen another set and I liked them because they are different. Originally they had no holes in them other than the bolt holes. He added a trick oil fill cap and 1/4 spacers that seal the covers to the heads with an o-ring, so no gaskets!
Also, Mark countersunk the bolt holes so the allen head screws will be flush -
I bought these covers from a guy on Facebook a few years ago - I have no idea who made them, I have never seen another set. They have "BD 404" cast into them (see previous pic) I tried an internet search but found no info. I'd love to find out who made them, any help would be appreciated.
