I have 60 P.S.I. when driving, but if I have to make a hard stop it drops to 0 and stays there for 15 seconds or so. It is a 1969 383 with a 402 pan. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Low oil level, aeriated oil, plugged pickup strainer, very low idle rpm...............

Mechanical gauge?
How many miles on the engine?
When was the pan last removed?

Yes, mech gauge, and also a light.
It has about 1200 miles on it since rebuild.
That's when the pan was off.
I think it originally had a windage tray, but not now.

Is it possible the baffle let go allowing the oil to leave the suction area on deceleration?

Just thinking of the possible "not so bad" things it could be!

get an accumulator. It compensates for that problem.

I'm going to pull the pan this winter to check it out.

Is there any thoughts on not having a windage tray with the 402 pan?

Did you put a HV pump on it when it was built? common issue, if you did somebody should have told you to put a 7+ qt pan on.
Just thinkin out loud

Yes it has a HV pump. I have them on a couple other motors, and they are OK. This is the only one with a stock pan, the others are 5 quart too. I think this engine has 20/50 Valvoline racing in it. Maybe the combination of thick oil & HV pump is the problem.

An extra 3 qts is a good thing!

I had the same issue with my first new mild performance 383. No baffle or windage tray. After that one, now all my engines either have an aftermarket or the 6 pack/Hemi pan and a tray.

BINGO- lessons learned from many builds.
I'm running same oil, HV pump, 383, 7 qt pan, but far from stock. You're moving a lot of oil, and an old timer once told me,
LUBRICATION IS YOU'RE FRIEND
I've found that to be true in many instances

Do you have the correct oil pickup for the pan? How far is the pickup off the bottom of the pan? If it is a stock pick up it should just touch the pan bottom.

I had the same problem...no baffle to stop the oil from rushing forward on hard braking....

windage tray will not cause or stop this, but it's a good idea to install one while you have the pan off

Install a baffel in the front and rear of the pan. Will keep oil from slushing out of pan on acell and decell. Also make sure the pickup is aligned with the botton of the pan before assembly. If tillted it increases the chance of pulling air.
