(Probably) an irrational fear...

Sorry to hear dadsbee's tale of woe.

I learned to drive in the UK and was taught, and still always do, set the hand/parking/emergency brake when parked. (At least in part because a never exercised 'emergency' brake isn't always going to work in an emergency!)

I have to use the parking brake now anyway as my car has a pushbutton TorqueFlite with NO park. Unfortunately, it's pretty poor and I daren't ever park on a slope

Parked uphill, turn wheels to the right
against the curb. (forces right rear tire
into the curb on a roll)
Parked downhill, turn wheels to the
right against the curb. (forces right
front tire against the curb on a roll).
Drivers' ED 101.

My cool neighbor had a Harley catch fire out of nowhere a couple months ago. Parked in the garage. He managed to put it out before too much damage was done and then discovered his wife somehow had a 70K policy on it and should have let it burn. Just some suped up FXR. I'm pretty good with bikes and still have no idea how it happened. Have a couple of theories but there's not enough left to test.

I took driver’s ed after I got my license so I could get cheaper insurance.
The instructor had a 63 Plymouth Fury 4 dr sedan, 383 auto and a 64 Fury 2 dr hdtp 6 3 on the tree. Another friend also had his licence. We were out in the 63 on the highway. Yes it was paved! He stopped the car, braked torqued it. Lit the tires up and said you should not drive like that. There weren’t very many cars that did that in our area.

I took drivers ED in highschool.
1970.
12 simulator stations. 3 on the tree
column shift with gas, brake, and
clutch pedals.
An auto trans in the New Yorker for
the road test. That hood looked 9
miles wide sitting in the drivers' seat.

I did my drivers Ed in continental can factory parking lot with 69runner 4 speed! I passed with smoking tires!
