This weather is some BIBLICAL PROPORTION stuff going on right now...

My grass went from brown to green last night.

I'll likely be mowing next weekend. Time to toss some SeaFoam in the snowblower and park it in the shed for the summer...

My wife asked me yesterday, " So, ready to mow grass again?"

It's truly an adventure out here on the ridge - some of the mowing is on steep slopes, there's like 3 acres
I "finish" mow and the type of grass itself actually wears the blades on the deck to the point I replace the
set of 3 every year - and then there's the usual carnage on parts on the deck itself.
Spindles (at $80 a pop) usually, blades regularly ($60 a set for cheap ones), but the deck itself (it's Italian!)
has remained tough as hell for going on 18 years now.

I wear my hearing protection when mowing now - between the diesel singing and the deck doing its' thing,
it's quite noisy and hurts my tinnitus. Eye protection too (shades) - it's wild how stuff flies around when
you're up in front of that rear-drawn deck and winds up in your face sometimes, especially with all that
gravel road we have that somehow winds up in the yard a bit, too.

All that said, I wouldn't miss it for the world. I used to dread it - now, it's a damn privilege and a blessing
to still be here to see it gets done.

I can only remember scary weather like that from when I was a kid, took a roof off up the road. We live on the side of a valley which helps knock the winds down quite a bit, rain washing the driveway out is my biggest problem.

Stay safe out there.

I'm the same way. LOVE yardwork. Sun, fresh air...freedom.

I have Bose noise-cancel earbuds that I wear. Play some tunes and block the mower noise, at the same time. Got 'em for plane travel, but they work awesome on the mower, too!

Which reminds me...I need a deck belt. I have one that was on the shelf that I finished the season with last year, but it's a hair too long and allows the blades to slip. 10 years with this mower (Cub Cadet steering wheel zero turn), I've replaced the belt twice now, and sharpened the blades once. No complaints. 4 acres on a hilltop, finish-cut about half of it and the other half I just field-mow.

My wife would say "think you can do the yard work today" but I don't have that problem anymore :D

Been wearing hearing and eye protection on mine for years but thinking about going with ear plugs AND muffs. Seems like the foam type plugs just aren't enough anymore. My deck is loud plus a straight pipe on a 531cc single lunger isn't exactly quiet either! Thing is when I put the muffler on it, I can feel the difference in power by a good bit and haven't been able to find a muffler that's half way quiet and doesn't rob power. And with the straight, I can actually mow with less rpm....so long as the blades are sharp. They have to be with the slower blade speeds.

Mine is an old Gravely 8163B with a 50" deck and it's been good on the belt. Bought it used around 88-89 (I think it's an 83 model) and fried the original belt trying to hog too high of weeds. The 2nd belt has been on it since about 91! Rebuilt the deck around 2003 and replaced the PTO clutch in 2008. That was a rpita!! It has a dual range forward and reverse 4 speed trans and had to remove everything from the gear box to get to that dang clutch lol. Used to like mowing etc but not so much anymore.....

Mine's a Massey-Ferguson 30hp diesel 4wd. It's pushing 18 years old now
and knock wood, has never needed much more than routine servicing.
Heck, I practically built the road with the thing, with me on it on top of 8'
piles of riprap and such....
She's been beat on some, but since it's actually built by what I understand
is the largest small diesel builder in Japan (Iseki) it's just dead nuts reliable,
all the way down to the clutch and 9 speed.

Since most domestic tractor companies' compact diesel tractors are actually
built in Japan (John Deere is actually Yanmar, for example), I did the usual
comparison shopping way back when - and Kubota was far and away the most
expensive for the same unit, followed by JD and New Holland).
M-F and AGCO are the exact same critters...
So I have a Japanese tractor pulling an Italian finish mower (Maschio)! :)
