'69 charger r/t-se: Building my dream car

I'm not sure who epse makes those gloveboxes but there's got to be someone. I'll ask Mr. Miagi when he comes by to lend a hand with the steering collumn/dash install.

Oh and here's a slightly better picture of all my under-dash stuff in, got the brake pedal all bolted in and rigged up. Hard to get a decent shot with the lighting but I'm loving the satin black on everything

And I looked around online for discount code but didn't have any luck, just a bunch of expired black friday codes. But with shipping I think I paid like $130 or something for the pair, so not too bad I think and worth it to have such sharp looking correct tips compared to an "off the shelf" muffler shop special haha

Well I finally made an executive decision on my mufflers, and didn't order any lol. Mike has a pair of 3" flowmaster 40's he ended up not using on his hemi roadrunner because of this weird metallic spudder noise it'd get at mid-high rpm. He tried a few different mufflers and they all had the same noise due more to a problem with his engine I think (ended up needing rebuilt). So basically he ended up with these brand new flowmasters, and after hearing this video of Mr Angry I decided I'll give em a shot and report back to you guys with the results. Worst comes to worst I'll just replace em with ultraflows down the road, but with the sound deadening I'll be doing I think they'll be alright.
Crank your speakers, grab a cold one, and enjoy :icon_thumleft:

Also narrowed down my steering wheel decision to a couple of options, what do you guys think?

1?

Or 2?

I like both of the wheels you've chosen "should look good in your black cockpit" and love the Super 40 sound (had them in my last car). Your under dash looks great, I know nobody will ever see it but it gives you a little piece of mind knowing it's done right and looks great anyhow. Looking Sweet

Thanks Devin! Thats for sure, the peace of mind is worth more than anything knowing it's all done right and not all rusty and cobbled together haha. I'm kindof leaning towards the 1st steering wheel with the lightening holes since I'm planning on machining some interior door handles with similar holes. Might tie it all together pretty well :shruggy: I just don't want it to be "too much". And that's good to hear, my buddy at the exhaust shop has 40's on his 440+6 '68 Roadrunner and it sounds awesome, no drone complaints from him either so we'll see!

Alright, one more question for everyone to wrap or not to wrap? I'm picking up a roll of 2"x50' black header wrap from Napa later and was planning on just wrapping the area of header around my starter since there's no way in hell a heat shield will fit, and I worry about a starter blanket actually holding in heat with the hotter temperatures of summer, long driving conditions etc.

But now I'm considering wrapping both headers entirely (might as well?). Figure it'll help underhood (air intake) temp and help protect my starter. Is this a good idea? Does it work well? Is it a pain in the @ss as far as wanting to come undone? Opinions on how itd look in my engine bay? Any experiences with it, opinions, etc anyone could share would be appreciated!
:eek:ccasion14:

I wrapped mine for two reasons #1 like you mentioned the heat insulation #2 I can't afford stainless or ceramic headers and hate rusty exhaust haha "it does look really good thou". Be prepared for allot of smoke off of them, itchy hands and be careful around the stainless zip ties if trimming them "they're like little razors". I'm also planning on making my own door handles so I'll have to keep my eye open for what you come up with.

Great build! Makes me want another one just to start over.

That first steering wheel is badass!

Excellent updates speedy. Your dash shots look great! Also thanks for the video that was cool sitting here drinking a brewski and I would love to have a set of those old DC valve covers.

I recall a thread about wrapping headers and some tips. Try searching for it. I'll give it a shot too and see if I can find it

Ooops here's a couple

Thanks for those links Brian, I actually meant to ask about the corrosion problem in my original post. I don't plan on driving through any monsoons, but it still seems like a valid concern.. with how close my starter is to those headers I really need to do something though. :thinker: maybe I'll mess with some cadboard as a heat shield template and see if it's going to be as impossible as I thought. Or maybe just wrap the closest parts of the header closest to the starter?

Thanks red! I have pictures saved of your Charger from your welcome wagon thread, I love what you did with your build :icon_thumleft: I actually have a question for ya too, I'm planning on machining some lowering blocks like Mr Angry did to get my stance closer to his and your cars, and was thinking like a 1 1/2" or 2" drop. What would you suggest?

+1 for steering wheel #1! Any more opinions guys? And should i go with a leather or suade grip? :eek:ccasion14:

Good progress and the list keeps getting shorter wish mine was getting shorter.decided to replace both outer wheel wells just to much cancer by the time im done i dont think there will be any orginal metal left. Keeps me out of trouble

You're really moving along Speedy. I don't know to think about the header wrap, it seems most people say the wrap holds condensation and makes the headers rust out rather quickly. I ended up buying ceramic coated ones because of this.

Hey Speedy - My vote is for #1 also . . . and it would have to be leather ! !

Much nicer to feel leather in your grips ! ! ( smile )

Or was I thinking about something else ? ! ? ! ? ! ?

Save that for the blue forum man :)

Speedy I forgot to comment on the steering wheel and I agree with #1 ... and a comment it reminds me of a 70's belt with the holes for some reason.

the 12 O' clock indicator is cool on both but prefer the metal of the first one

I wrapped my headers, also used a starter off 96 dodge 360 p/u.seems to have more room than yours.

Yeah that might need to be hashed out in the blue room Larry lol! But yeah I was thinking the same thing. Also I started getting up to speed on your project thread, I'm loving your concept and that new hemi is gonna be awesome! I'm still only about halfway through but I'll be chiming in soon as I get caught up :icon_thumleft:

Hmm yeah I can dig it :icon_rr: haha! And they remind me of that wwII aircraft cockpit type feel chrysler was supposedly going for with the instrument cluster too. I guess number 1 it is!

That's interesting Charlie, are you running the same hedman headers?

Should have mentioned I'm also running a mini starter "plenty of clearance". I've heard the same about rotting the headers out but if they are going to rust "which they will anyhow" I at least don't want to see it haha. I'm honestly just doing it to buy me time until I can buy either stainless or ceramic but for now it's all about driving it this Spring.

damm tallhair that wheel looks awesome. i had one like the #2 pic above with the flat bottom wrapped in swede you would never have the wheel slip out of your hands for sure. go with your gut feeling speedy, all your choices so far looking pretty dam good to me.

Oh I see, and yeah I'm planning on some ceramic tti's when I tear everything back apart for the procharger hopefully next winter. I'm right there with ya in the "I just wanna drive it!" boat haha. So right now I think I'm decided on just wrapping the area of header closest to the starter and calling it good. It'd be a royal PITA to fully wrap both of them when they're already in the car anyway haha.

Not to confuse the issue but you said 'cockpit' and as I was looking at Drew's 68 1/2 RR post this morning and this steering wheels screams aircraft style cockpit don't you think? Your choices are cool above too but thought you might want to see this if you haven't already before you make a purchase.

Hey thanks for sharing that Brian, that's definitely a cool wheel and in line with that cockpit style :icon_thumleft: But in the spirit of doing something different I think I'm pulling the trigger on wheel #1 in leather. I kindof like the minimal look of it, the lightening holes, and the 3 spoke vaguely makes me think of the mopar tuff wheel. And I decided on leather mainly just because I know my greasy mits would have the suede looking like a cat had been chewing on it after a few months lol.

But that brings me to a new problem, I'm having trouble finding a hub adapter for a sparco wheel to an old mopar (go figure!). Might have to whip up something on the lathe at work :shruggy:

Edit: I forgot to mention "hell yeah!" I love those direct connection valve covers on Mike's car, wonder how rare they are to come across these days.
