71 GTX Build

When people look at your car, I seriously doubt that they will think or say, "man I can't believe you painted your car a gm color!" Are you going to go with strobes amd if so what color?
Always going to have people be like that or say "that's not factory".

That's true I suppose but for those who do, they have a lot bigger problems if they are that critical of a car color.

Torred, I thought your car was finished judging by your picture. How far do you have to go?

I'm not much farther than crahill. My car is painted, K installed with motor, rear installed, etc, etc. Hard to designate any amount of time to work on it when on a military base half way around the world. So I work on it when I can but driving me crazy!

I need to start a thread for mine and show EVERYTHING done. Have a LOAD of pictures

First of all - thanks for your service brother - your sacrifices are greatly appreciated by most everyone on this board ! Stay safe and make it home to your family and that sweet ride that awaits you. I think it would be a good idea to start a thread for your build. I did it to force me to keep on it and the input I have gotten has helped tremendously.

My original hood is in very bad shape and sourcing another one has been a challenge. The body man working on my car is a pretty special guy, and does some outstanding work. He swears he can take the aftermarket N96 bubble/door combo and make it look factory on the Satty hood I have. Other than the Air Grabber hood setup, the only stripes will be around the rear bumper lights and down the lower rear valence.

I know I need to start a thread. Only issue with it is I can only go so far with the thread and who knows when it can be updated. The main, heavy components are on and a lot of the little stuff. My car has come a looong way since I tore it apart. I'm fortunate I had VERY little rust on it which made it easier to deal with and fix. My "to do list" is long but I just need to concentrate on one specific thing at a time. Been trying to get a hold of my engine builder because I have a few questions but don't know if he is still in business now :(

I'd probably still try to find a GTX/RR hood if you can. Then yet, it's your car. That color looks great even if it's a GM one. It looks like Winchester Gray but darker(?). The stripes would look killer on that anyway.

1st round of Lizard Skin has been sprayed in the interior. Tomorrow, if all goes well, the ceramic heat insulation will be sprayed on top.

Pics.

Topcoat of heat insulation has been layed down, and the underside & wheel wells have been coated with Upol Raptor liner. The lizard skin really quiets the metal down nicely.

That paint job looks awesome! And lizard skin seems to be a good product. I might use that product instead of classic dynamat insulation but I'm not sure yet.
Great car by the way :)

If it helps any, the shop doing the body work on my car has never used it before until this build. They really liked that it was easy to shoot, water based, and cleaned up well. Also, when comparing the sound difference on the metal, the Lizard Skin deadened the sound better than the dynamat. The only drawback is someone might be skeptical about the condition of the metal underneath the Lizard Skin, but I have documented this build with tons of pictures to prevent just that sort of thing.

Progress has slowed down a bit as we wait for the powder coater to get caught up with all the suspension parts. They did finish the rearend and I am having the gears swapped out to 3:55's and new axle bearings pressed on. Pics of the diff (rims are not mine).

Great documentation and pics. Michael the owner of the 72 Satellite / GTX I've been reporting on has decided to go this route also. Perhaps he read your post. He is getting the stuff today and we'll shoot it on and let dry before we do the media blasting of the outside body. This so if we do get any Lizard Skin over spray on the outside body it will come off with media blasting.

Thanks, I'll post the results over on our thread.

I think you both will be satisfied with the choice. I researched so many products and this one stood out. I figured if I was going to go all out and tear the car down this far, I should put this on as a permanent solution. This also saved me quite a bit in overall paint costs, as there was no need to shoot the inside, trunk, and underneath the car as this was going directly over the epoxy primer.

I decided to black out all the chrome pieces with a flat satin. The powder coater did a fantastic job on the bumper. This was a real cost saver. I blasted my air cleaner and he put a real nice textured finish on it. The only bummer is that my rear bumper was rusted and to dented/pitted to save. I will be buying a new rear just to have it powder coated.

All the suspension components are back from the powder coater. Got in all new fuel lines, tank, sending unit, filler neck, and grommets. I have to repair the vapor separator as some of the metal rusted out. Also ordered new Wilwood disk brakes for the GTX which should arrive in a week or so. The fenders, valences, and header panel were painted as well. Got the new rear bumper and did my own flip flop on going back to using chrome over the blacked out pieces. It just looked too good against the paint. Hoping to have the car off the rotisserie and on her own legs in a couple weeks!! Pics are a bit dusty.

Welded up a new piece on the face plate of the vapor separator. Sine this will be covered in raptor liner, I wasn't overly concerned with perfect welds and stuff.

Are you going to all 4 disc brakes? this weekend I removed the cobbled together mess that was the stock proportioning valve and the SSBC adjustable one (which leaked a tiny bit), and replaced it all with a wilwood adjustable one. Braking is VASTLY improved. I was having a problem where it felt like there was either no vacuum help, or too much. I had a theory that something was plumbed wrong, and it was somehow fighting itself.

Great job on the car! I look forward to seeing more.
