Advice for 1970 Sport Satellite

No when my finger blew out the hole as I bumped started it I assumed TDC and marked the damper with a painted line at 9 degrees. What timing mark are you referring to?

These (marks on front cover and the line on the damper). Note: these are on a '68 318. The marks on your '70 would more than likely be on the other side. But I'm sure you get the idea.

Ahh so Mopar did this OK I even took the paint off the damper in the area where I thought I was at TDC but it was smooth. Now that I know they had a factory TDC notch then I will hunt for it and see if I can find. I assume this is a factory set up but who knows its been 48 years lol. If its there I will see if it corresponds to what I might determine is TDC by the same method I used previously.

Question if lcylinder #1 is NOY at TDC will I still get spark?

You might still get spark. Find yout tdc mark and bump the motor over til its close to lined up on the tab. Check the position of your rotor.

Thanks one more question. Can I use my Mittvac to draw fuel through my fuel pump without damage or should I draw the air out of my line just before the fuel pump?

I wouldnt worry about the fuel. Focus on getting the timing close for now. It sounds like your off a fair amount right now.

OK late start thanks to my Dr. And JimK haha just kidding. Jims car is unbelievable and was the nicest car at the show really! Jim I tip my hat to you really impressive work!

Ok onwards my issue is still indeterminate at this point. I either have a duel or timing issue and I believe I have both sooooo

I tried to use my Mitivac to pull fuel from the tank to the carb connection. No go. I did pull fuel to before the pump and the hard line after the carb was good and ooen. So I am just going to throw new fuel pump to rule that out. The fuel system then will be all new and no left unknowns.

No I did find the original timing mark on the damper or what I used to call the harmonic balancer. It was infact 15-20 degrees off (retarded) from the mark I made so I was close but not exactly DNO (dead nuts on).

So because I can not manually turn the engine to align to the factory TDC with a breaker bar on the crank. I am wondering whats the best way to set this sucker up. I could just advance the crap out of the dizzy but I know I will have no room for furhter advance. I also know this is NOT the correct way to set it up.

Oh and my nee aircleaner came in and I love it! I feel like I am in HS again lol.

Just bump the motor with the starter

If you don't have a handheld starter button I suggest you buy one. Makes things easier! But with that said I generally use a flex handle, the right length ext. and socket to rotate the engine to find TDC and line the timing marks up to where I want them. Then set the distributor and rotor where I want them to be. Having all the spark plugs out makes this easy.
(And it's so easy to remove the plugs on a small block)

Great meeting you and your wife. We made it home uneventful. Not sure if it was the new electronic ignition or what but it got over 16MPG cruising 75MPG up and back today! Never gotten above 13 before!

Hi PP1 great meeting you today crazy how much all three of us have in common!
Wanted to dind a better method of hunt and peck for alignment I think it would take forever. Even with my remote start lol...but I may resort to this is necessary...

Flex socket? Hum not sure what that looks like but maybe Harbor Freight has them? Also do you know what size socket is needed? Its larger than any I have.....I would prefer this method since I have horrible luck in Vegas :)

Yes really interesting meeting you guys and putting a face to a name. So much in common. Your work is awesome!! While my car will never get to that level its great to see and will help me along the way! I got some good shots of it but unfortunately none of those Harley girls in it.

No, not flex socket. Flex handle, it's what you refer to as a breaker bar.
And the socket size for the crank bolt is one and a quarter inch.

Lol should breaker bars flex much ha! Ok 1-1/4 roger that....

Ok so here is where I am at.
Replaced fuel pump.
Aligned crank to precise TDC marking on the H-balancer. See pic
I could not start it after multiple attempts. So my wife was like let me in there I had. Mopar in HS lol.

Engine fired up but it took some aggressive feathering by my wife. But died and lots of smoke which I expected. It did run a few times rather successfully and then I heard some rod noise I think as well. Ran real rough timing for sure was off as I was shooting it.

I shot the timing but before I could get that adjusted she either seized or I fried the starter even though I was letting it cool down between short bursts.

Now when I try to start the car I get a larger current draw and I hear what I think is the starter solinoid kick in. I think the starter is trying to crank but the engine won’t budge. I tried this 4 hours later to let everything cool down and charged the battery but again the starter sounds like its slamming the crank. I get no crank movement.

Crap.....

You must have met someone else. I haven't been to a car thing since August here in IA.
Sounds serious on the car....good luck

Oh man, I really hope it is the starter. To know for sure, you need an 1 1/4" socket on a ratchet and try and turn the motor over by the balancer bolt. If it won't budge you will know the answer :(

If it is the motor @69Bee is down here is southern Arizona but you won't find a better machine shop. Dave is a Mopar guy and will do it right.

Hey Threewood yes my plan is to see if I can rotate the assembly and confirm that she is locked up. I will also look for any metal in the oil. Probably will pull the starter to confirm that it works. I will have to pull the fan its just too difficult with that in the way and I don’t want to mess it up. If there is anything else I need to verify please let me know!
Thanks!
