Advice for 1970 Sport Satellite

He would snap off the pinion shaft of the -741 rear end first!

Doubt it :)
Same rear Mopar had backing up the max wedge cars. The u joint or ring gear will fail before the pinion. I have the 741 in my GTX.

With coolant pouring out of two cylinders I would be worried about bent rods from hydrolock. I would pull the motor. And as was mentioned, the freeze plugs are probably rusty. I'm glad it isn't seized.

Too be 100% honest I am not sure I am up to the task to tackle the scope of this project and am now wondering if I should get out now before I am in way over my head.......my health is not as good as it needs to be to be doing a lot of this work......so I have to unfortunately seriously consider if this project it still in my wheelhouse...

How much!!!!!!

It pretty much is......head gaskets, oil and filter and let her rip...

Jeff
Yeah i dont think a 318 has enough power in stock trim to hurt itself. Low rpm lockup shouldnt bend rods but bearing life may have been shortened.
Yank the heads and see what you see. It aint the end of the world. Must be a retired mopar guy near you that will enjoy the steak you cook him when he comes to help you.

Especially if it was barely running when it happened!

Really love the 1970 B body this girl has......on one shoulder and on the other is the devil saying give it up lol

Thats where I am at right now.

I might just start tearing it down to see whats what and drain it all out and get a film of oil on everything but you know how that goes once you start down that path...

Wow! Well it doesn’t actually run over 5000 RPM so I’m not impressed

:icon_fU:
I have it sorted out funny guy. Bumped my timing up and it will rev up fine....now :) I even have the smaller u joint in the yoke lol.

Sorry to hear about the health issue. Maybe just take it slow and get some car buds to help you. If I were closer I'd be happy to help. Good luck.
Thanks SSix for the kind offer! Encouragement is always appreciated!

I'm right down the road if you need an extra set of eyes or hands. It would be a nice change to work o someone else's car for a change lol.

I could get that thing tore down in a morning if you have an air compressor, let us know. With Threewood and Billccm to supervise....

So do I, as I we discussed I am a soft spot for Sport Satellites and finding one that has not been turned into a GTX/RR clone is difficult. That is why I am trying to steal your girlfriend :)

Ok I needed too put this decision on the pillow. I have the will and desire to move forward and investigate the failure and try and see if I can work with this 318.

I really appreciate all you guys offering to help. I really do it’s amazing the real community here and real friendship that is possible. Will gladly take what I can get help wise but also realize that you guys have your jobs, family and own projects to work on not to mention distances like Bill and Jim.

That being said I would gladly cover your travel expenses like gas and provide food and drinks for any of you gents willing and able to help at any time!

What I can start doing is some basic leg work, draining all fluids dropping the pan. I can start this tonight or tomorrow.

I have a 2 stage compressor and an engine hoist. I have been collecting tools for the last 20 years so I have quite a bit with also Harbor Freight right down the road.

The concern right now is rod bearings I think. Once I drain the oil and drop the pan could I crank the engine with the starter to learn anything about the rotating assembly? Could I do this at any phase of the teardown?

Threewood lives in Yuma :)

First thing to decide:
- Pull the engine up and out
- Drop the K-Frame with the entire drive train

I think threewood make a k-Frame cart and I have one I made you can borrow. Dropping the K-Frame may sound harder but I think it is the right way in the long run for several reasons. It makes working on everything _so_ much easier. When out on the floor you can check over everything in the front end, the transmission will be out so you can drop the pan and look at it closely (replace seals, etc). It minimizes the amount of time you are on the floor and leaning over the hood as well. I have pulled many engines out the top and I have hated every one. Dropping the K-Frame was really very easy and takes virtually the same amount of time.

And you can put the bolts back in to make it a roller if you have to after you lift the engine/transmission out.

My 2 cents.

Thansk Jim! How much clearance do I need to clear the assembly? Do I need more than a floor jack? Seems like I would need 3 feet or so! Also I lift at the K-Frame. So what I am really asking is how to get the beast up that high....

Floor Jack to jack it up to get the necessary bolts loosened/driveshaft dropped/transmission cross member removed/k-frame bolts loosened (impact works well). then jack it down to lightly lay on the dolly. Hook the engine hoist on the front bumper. remove the 4 k-frame bolts which then the entire front end/engine assembly is on the dolly. Jack up the front of the body with the engine hoist (very light compared to the engine) and roll the power train out.

WOW great documentary on your build. I see how to lift the car now. I am still contemplating a quick short term approach just to replace all the gaskets vs a complete overhaul. I really just want to get her running for a bunch of reasons. I know I don’t like temporary fixes and like to be complete if I pull the K then I know I will be rebuilding the whole front end and motor and trans and that will take a long time. So I am chewing on both approaches but am leaning towards just a minimal approach to see if that might get her running.

FYI the oil I pulled originally was in nice honey color shape with no evidence of milk from any coolant. That gasket blew while initially trying to get her running and she ran for maybbe a minute and a half max.

Go for the head gaskets in car. Your only out the price of gaskets and a little time if the problems are bigger. A few hours time you will have it together. Have the guys over to help and you will probably have it up and tunning in no time. Those 318s are tough little fuckers...
