And so it begins..... my new garage

. I sure as hell wasn't
Dont blame you! That looks like a cartoon trap ....I've seen that to many times on Saturday mornings!!!

Looks good 747. You guys are really getting that thing knocked out!
I sure wish it felt like it was getting knocked out!!! I guess looking back it wasn't that long ago Larry was helping me finish the concrete work and starting the framing, considering the size and the fact that I work 50+ hrs a week it's not going to badly.

I had help loading all of the insulation into the upstairs last night, looking at that mammoth size pile of insulation just shows how much is left to be done.

Garage doors will be in this week so I'll be picking those up Sat leaving 1 more man door to buy so that's a big plus.

Seems like time creeps by when it's your own project...then you talk to someone else doing something similar and it's ..."oh I threw it together over the weekend..."
Still looks like a lot of progress, have you figured out your bridge.yet???

I've got some friends keeping their eyes out for an old house trailor frame or anything along those lines. If I come up empty handed which I doubt I'll just order some channel iron and build it. Thought about a beefy treated lumber bridge with 2X4s standing on ends for the deck leaving gaps for drainage? I'm confident by laminating the joist and using plenty of them it would be more than strong enough, we'll see but it's already becoming a priority to get it in.

I'm just tickled to death that I'm still driving it in November, with the weather we're having I'll be driving it on Christmas day!!! A bit cold in the morning though, this was this morning taking the kids to school.. 29 degrees and the race carb with no choke fired right up:thumbsup:. Wearing a T shirt by 1:00!

I bet other kids at the school are jelly when you give your kids a ride in this beauty.

I hope that 2x6 is a #1 grade lol
Lol, I don't think a 2X6 will cut it. I was thinking more on the lines of 2X12s laminated together which no doubt would do it especially if running 3-4 laminated joist length wise. 2X6s would do it if used to build a truss beam like we did inside and would be even stronger yet??? Really thinking about just going with wood after contemplating it, I could anchor angled brace to both the rock and wall reducing the spanned length to around 8ft or so. Thinking:realcrazy:

I really think it would be more appealing on the eye than a metal bridge.

I was talking about the one from the window to the rock. Isn't that the one that was being used as a 'walkway'? lol

Ironically kids seam to care more about having me blow the dixie horn lol. Yes my kids beg to be driven everywhere in it which makes my day. Thanks

Ahhhh..... no way in hell I'm walking over that let alone driving!! Sorry, totally forgot about that picture. We actually laid that across to slide the roofing into the upstairs... go figure somebody would walk it.

It being popular instead of pine is likely why Larry didn't eat dirt on that one... maybe he's just graceful???

Im just wodering if you are installing any lateral strapping/supports?
Im no engineer but have have been in/around construnction for many years...the concern is about the lateral loads since the walls are so high. Especially the energy transfered to the upper portion if pulling a vehicle in and stopping...
Ive seen sheetmetal ties (10 ") wide 12 ga. strip run from upper corner down to the opposite lower corner... I think it is mainly for wind loads pushing against the sides which is a lateral load of sorts..
Will the bridge actually attach to the building?
Not trying to add fuel to the fire, just food for thought...
Im sure some engineers here could chime in...

Hey chime away, you guys asking questions or forwarding ideas makes for new ideas.

I know exactly what your saying and have already been thinking about it. Stopping a 1,200 lbs side by side on a 13' tall wall will tend to move it a bit. I don't recall if it shows up in the pics but I added diagonal braces spanning from the ceiling to the sill on every corner however once the metal is on they really don't add much. With the building only being 34' long it's very rigid but I still plan on installing diagonal braces at least in the area that it will be parked plus where it enters is very close to the rear wall and right over the block post downstairs.

Whether or not to attach the bridge to the building is something I've been contemplating as well. The building will move a bit making attaching it to the rock a bad idea and it's sitting over 4ft of fill, drainage tile, gravel, etc so piers are out. I think the best option is to attach it but float it on both sides, possibly large holes that sit over pins so while it's attached it will allow for settling and slight wind movement?? On the rock I'll likely chisel a shelf (mostly already has one) for the bridge to rest on then epoxy pins to it. For the floor I'm thinking about fabbing a plate that will serve as a threshold and mounting point?

Here's a few pics. I'm really happy with the way it's turning out but really don't like the fact that the only 2 sides I see everytime I look out the window are the unfinished ones.

I really don't enjoy cutting into a metal building to tuck flashing or purlins in so I'll just deal with looking at this until Spring. Everything is there to just tie in and run with it, even the door is framed under the plywood.

Here's a better pic of where the bridge will be, it should sit almost perfectly level once you figure in the height of a beam sitting on the rock and even with the floor.

"Mail Pouch" on the side? The old ones from the 50's are fading away? lol. Just thinking out of box. Local artist to paint faux windows? Too many brewski's!!

Somehow I don't think the wife would approve? It does look more like a barn than a garage though, hopefully the addition next Spring will change that.

Think I may have found my bridge, a buddy down the rd has a 24' school bus frame. I'll go check it out when I get a chance.

Garage doors are in:thumbsup:. Now how do I get them:realcrazy:. Ordered them from a dealer 2 hrs away (awesome deal on top of the line doors) but they're only open while I'm at work and I can't send my dad into Columbus traffic in his beat up Chevy with subpar brakes. Hmmm

Can't wait to get those in and fill 2 more huge holes.

Another development that I questioned whether or not to post but I'm excited as hell about it so why not.... we just doubled are little ones!!! The wife and I have been looking into adoption for awhile now and just found out we're getting siblings (brother and sister). Can't wait, I absolutely love kids and look forward to it but this means putting the accelerator to the floor on the garage!
