Wife wanted a Dodge Nitro, bought her a brand new one.
Less than 5k miles on it and it's dripping oil on the garage floor.
Looks like it's coming from a plastic chute of some sort just in front of the oil pan. See pic.
What is that thing and why is oil dripping off it?
Wife will ask dealer @ next oil change,..but it's got me puzzled and wanting to know now.

That plastic piece is a trough. It catches the oil that drains when the oil filter is removed so it does not pour down all over the front differential and steering gear. Make sure the oil filter is on tight. If you are at or nearing 5K miles its time for an oil change anyway. If you just had an oil change, there will be residual oil left over. They don't pay us enough to do the oil change much less wipe the left over oil off, but if you ask specifically they should do it. At least I do.

Yes i had the same problem.if it is a 4x4,it kinda hard to tighten the oil filter properly,

It is a 4X4. Had the oild changed @ Dodge Dealer @ 3K. Didn't see anything on the floor til recently. Wiped the trough and the floor off, a few days later...more oil spots.
Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to have the wife mention it to the dealer next time. She bought an oil change contract, so they'll be doing the next few LOF's.

it uses a spin on filter so if it keeps dripping, dont wait for next oil change.go in and complain,it might be double gasketed and could blow out at a very inopertune time.plus a dealer will fight the hell out of you over buying a new motor.
