For All Aircraft Nut's.....a Hemi counterpart...the Incredible Howard 500

Howard Kil'r

G-1.jpgG-1 2.jpgG-1 3.jpgG-1 4.jpgG-1 DEA.jpgThe Grumman Gulfstream 1. My Dad flew and ended his career flying one of these for a AZ mining outfit, that became a subsidiary of Pennzoil around 1966, right around when the Grumman G-ll pure jet came out, Pennz bought one of the first ones and in turned kicked a G-1 from their stable down to the new child co. Rolls Royce Dart engines. Duvals Bird was # 13 built in 59, but new owner who ordered airplane didn't want 13, so they skipped and called it 14....nary a ghost near, great airplanes. But the Howard was still 100 mph faster could fly transcontinental non-stop, mush higher thane the Gulfstream...Grumman had huge clout with Feds, what with their military building and all....Dee had the 500 ready in 59.....the feds until 64 did not issue His C of A (cert of airworth), with altitude restrictions The 500 was 500K new, the Grumman was more and could not perform ike Dee's a/c end of story. The Grumman's advantage one was operating costs...but it wasn't as fast, couldn't go as high and had to stop more often....so Grumman got the feds to stall Howards production a few years enabling them to establish a firm footing in the market....but the Howard will s#it and git on this very handsome airplane....i remember, idle speed on Darts was 14,000. It was a lot easier to land and i'm pretty sure the props on the ex Penzz bird were full reverse. its been a minute. But it couldn't operate short field like the Howard......howard is a DEA target bird, meaning they look to see if haulin dope is your angle, cuz they'll operate pretty short and carry a lot. The last pic i think is a DEA Bird, all that s#it hanging off it. After the G-ll is when there was some kind of split or whatnot and the they became just Gulfstream Aerospace, seperating from parent Grumman.
I think i saw two of these complete props in yard of aviation mart in mohave...i want them....got another source for complete red tag general aviation props for songs....usually it just the blades thar are red tag tho...so pull the blades and selle the spiders/hubs to overhaul shops....complete small props would make bitchin cieling fans....instead of speed, just use blade deflection to control air movement...oops, there i go ...off topic again anyway G-1 very good looking airplane

I remember when the GII came out...I think I still have the FLYING magazine article. With 11,000 pound thrust engines, they remarked that it was 'magnificently overpowered'.

When I was a teen, I would drool over a Rockwell Aero Commander 690. For me, that was the epitome of looks and style, especially with club seating. Low to the ground and sleek.

Unfortunately, the twin Commander production ended after Chrysler bought them out in 1985.

Having a ph meeting later this afternoon with one of the warbird resto outfits @ CNO (Chino) this afternoon about N130P.....start trying to get some projections and figures started....the real shame is that the A/C could be ferry flown out had not barron thomas & his punk kid destroyed the panel in A/C. In 90's a foul deal got set into motion by thomas and they falsified title to A/C. had owner in negotiation..he started smelling the stink of something bad coming and pulled out...thomas's kid broke in, stole all instruments, but further vandalized it by destroying all the looms behind panel...airplanes do not have color coding because there is so much wiring in an a/c, there are not enuf colors in the spectrum...so each wire is banded w/ tags....the Howard prob'ly has something like fifteen miles of loom init,,,could easily be more....so the job of fixing everything behind panel in middle of desert would end up counter productive....so a/c has to be de-mated and trucked out....the wings detach at engine nacelles, but inners are not going anywhere, so that makes the load over 22 ft wide, meaning it can only be moved at night.....major expense....but there is a couple people besides myself that are emotional about the a/c that want to see it in a shop, being massaged. Think Good things for Bird please....a rare piece of history sitting in desert deteriorating when it should be in the air. Thomas DID go to prison over this..hope the bitch is still on a gang pullin stumps. Anybody ever see 'Harlem Nights" the little Guy with the pea shooter pistol..pink, pink? When all the heavy artillery is going off and then followed by this pea shooter hoping to find a mark....how i feel about myself & my pursuit of trying to find a buyer for A/C...my little pea shooter going off now & then hoping to find a mark...LOL...got no dough, but i got Heart.

RC....337's are snotty little performers, Skymaster. Ever see the AO-2 w/ rockets slung under wing?

I need to correct myself on a n earlier post when i was speaking of Paul Mantz's loss in the filming of Flight of the Phoenix. I called the Boxcar a Fairchild C-121....it is a Consolidated C-119...The Fairchild(121 may be in correct) is the Bird air america was moving all the coke & heroin with.... daddy bush's baby. Anybody ever read Flyboys? All those guys died on that island except one, hw bush he went down in his TBM, but there was a sub waiting to pick him up, but they forsook all those other Guys. Thas because prescott bush had harriman in his corner.

This is Clay Lacy's unlimited Connie Racer..a 1049 named Red Baron...His other one was a DC-7 named Super Snoopy....kinda' like France kicking winged cars out of nascar...these birdsg ot kicked out, they were competeitive, had the endurance, were formidable contenders against the warbird unlimiteds....they did disturb everybody elses air pretty bad..big turbulence wakes...they were running over 300, not far off deck. DC-7's wintip within 15 ft of ground negotiating pylons. The Connie was prepped to friendly compete against the DC-7 for the 71 Californis....the DC-7 having placed 6th in the 70 1000.......Connie never got the chance.View attachment 255486View attachment 255487the Beech 18 on steroids is a Hamilton Westwind ll 18 conversion built for Connie Kallitta in 75...i worked @ Hamilton, low level involvement w/ this bird & the other 18 conversions. This has a 9 foot stretch split evenly fore & aft of main spar and cabin was raised 9"...motors are Garrett dash 10 turbines

Super Snoopy CL # 64

View attachment 255506Clay Lacy's DC-7 unlimited racer....Super Snoopy ran Mojave 1000 in 1970 finishing sixth against the unlimited warbird singles..averaged 325, negotiating 15 pylons. was reported to turn tighter than an A-26 in field and reported to be closer to deck than competition.....both DC-7 and Connie were banned for 71.....sanctioners are pussies...Guy takes airliners and gives unlimiteds a scare, get thrown out of party and Mopar pushes door slammers past 200 and gets thrown out of...jeez, PC has no place in racing....it's racing

Clay Lacy Unlimited Airliner...a Fomidable Conteder

View attachment 255761Footage of the low level, 15 mile pylon course, 1000 mile unlimited this bird placed 6th in w/ an avg speed of 325 mph....winning Sea Fury avg, 344 mph...and they were banned from ever running again. used 4100 gals av-gas & 80 gals Pennzoil SAE 70 prob'ly both 115 oct & 130, those 2 stage blown Pratt 2800's use 130 for take-off pwr... they cook with about 64 inches of MAPS @ take off pwr (manifold pressure)

O-2A_Nellis2010_1484_800.jpgo2.jpgcessna_o-2.jpgThere You go RC..... Armed they make me think of Yellow Jackets Civilian desig is 337 Military desig. O2 & O2-A

PS: I'm 20 miles "outside" of Mojave.

That was Teri Custer, Mojave High School, Miss Mojave (Spelling of her name may not be correct) in the car in parade.
My "Bud" was at the race. She graduated 4 years ahead of him.

The Super Snoopy, Clay Lacy (Lacy Lear Jets and the number 3 top airline pilot United Airlines) was sitting in the right Seat (Pilot) because they were flying so low he had to keep an eye on the right wingtip, didn't want to hit a pylon.

Now that You've seen a four engine airliner be competitive in unlimited.....makes my claim of driving motorhomes sideways a bit more believable don't it? Seriously roflmfao! The night Tokyo Drift came out, i educated a stampede of rice burner kids that the Japanese did NOT invent the drift....twisted that Tioga into a pretzel with the inside front 2 1/2 feet off pavement..."....up on a tightrope...." and my Dog riding shot gun with a mile long tounge out the winder flappin in da breeze...She was havin to go uphill to get Her head out the window the body roll was so severe...* note to self * need sub-frame connectors. & since i love Clint's movie so much i will have a mylar visor made up...."*HIGH* Plains Drifter"
Everybody have a Great Week

Thought I'd post a picture of Jim (Bladecutter) since I met him recently in Van Nuys @ Fall Fling.

It Is Always nice to see a Thread of Jims Revived, Reminds me of What a Brilliant man he is. I love his T Shirt :icon_winkle:

Another R4360 powered AC---I did not see mentioned---was the B-50, a variant of the B-29

You can recognize them by the gigantic scoops under the engine nacelles. I don't know if all of them had the added wing tanks

B-50D%20bw%20sm.jpg

Below, a B-50, no wing tanks. This is hooking up to the Bell X-1, too large to post here

When I was in school (A&P) our final test on the engines class included this:

What is the firing order of the 4360?

I got it right..........
