Nz 70 rr

Barry did a great job with window corner. Used the patch I made but cut it into 3 pieces. We trial fitted the glass and fited the sail panel to get corner right . The replacement sail panel brace has also been welded in.
Nearly finished the quarter trunk lip.

I'm amazed at the FAB skills being shown here on this thread.

Quarter trunk lip finished. Barry may light work of the fiddley welding. I had folded up a small piece of the gutter using the bench vice. Used it to replace the end of the lower gutter that had rust holes.

Passenger rear window corner came together real quick as I had trial fitted the reinforcing bits I made.

We the trial fitted the new quarter. Will need some taps and squeezing buts looks fantastic. Can't wait till Barry returns on Wednesday.

Looking good NZ. Always uplifting when new Quarters make it to the car. You and Barry keep up the good work!

Great work! Looks terrific with all the work and skills you guys have shown..

Getting closer.

1st few photos are of the repair to the inner wheel arch. Did it in 2 parts in the end. Cut and welded arch edge , then same for the arch lip. The strip of metal I had folded ,then stretched was going to cause too much tension in the quarter lip.
Quarter had couple of transport bumps needing attention.

Trunk extension needed more metal at the front and needs a trim at the rear.

The quarter lip and the tub lip are going to pull together real nice.

Both the filler panel and the quarter panel needed some metal removed. Barry used cut-off wheel, tapped gap closed , then welded.

I have been making patches.

Barry back on Thursday for big welding day.

quarter on

Quarter now welded on. Also got original upper and new lower trunk gutters on. We will not weld the filler panel on until I get the trunk lid skin cleaned and we re-assemble it to the frame. Barry wants to get the gaps right.
Was a couple of holes and repairs needed to corner where dip rail ends.
He has started repairing the tail panel.

Blasted edge of trunk lid frame and painted.

Have had the skin galvinised . They acid dipped it first , then wash it , then galv dipped. Used gold rather than silver because the gold tank was bigger. Acid ate all the rust and more. Skin lip needs some welding. Will see what Barry thinks. Will give underside of skin a good scuff where the adhesive goes and scuff all over on the outside before painting.

I wish I had a deck lid that looked as good as yours Nz. Mine had a huge dent in it and lots of rust. I ended up taking it to a professional to get it fixed. Your 70 is coming along nicely keep up the good work.

That does look great, Hope it all works out! that first picture looks like it was ready to go, real nice...

Body ready

Barry been here today and monday, got through a power of work, end result is the panel work is complete . Trunk lid skin and frame need re-assembleing once I buy the correct non-shrinking glue. Hood can wait for now as I want to take advantage of the end of summer weather to prime and filler the body.
Barry finished the tail section then welded in the filler panel, spare tire bracket, and gas tank strap brackets. He patch welded the guard, front window pillar and battery area.
I am really pleased the finished result. Looking forward to the next step.

Boy your really pounding out the repairs, looking great.

NJ, The looks of Barry's work, i would be looking forward to the next step myself, That is some nice work, i bet your getting a bit excited on this 70 and that first start up! :)

I could use Barry up at my place in Tauranga for a couple of days lol. Great fab work NZ and can't wait to see the finished result. Did you order your quarters through Muscle Car Parts in Auckland?

more progress

Thanks for the feedback fellars, appreciate you taking the time.
I decided that I would be crazy not to keep Barry working till panel work was done.

Hi Chargerjase, got my AMD bits off a guy Steve Delve . He is their NZ agent. Have his details if you want them.

Been doing boring jobs last couple of weeks, sanding epoxy ready for primer, cleaning parts,Sandblasting trunk frame, etc.

Barry came yesterday for 4 hrs. We had a couple of welding jobs on body them he started putting trunk lid together. Folded over the lip and then began welding the splits up. Got the sides done and has spot welded the front.

I have put the doors and guards on so we can check the gaps, looks good so far.

Today I applied the seam sealer, 80% done , need a new tube.

First photo has a funny effect look to it. I brought myself a new camera and I didn't check the settings , so first round of photos look like oil paintings LOL.

You guys are doing great work and made short work out of a fairly big project. I have to imagine new paint is not far away now. That's the best part of a resto imo.
