one of my long time friends is a flat earther........

On an ocean voyage as an example - two yachts sail directly out from port, after about 25-30 miles, they both disappear form view.

And yet oddly enough, the crew on both yachts can still see each other, and notice no change in their position relative to the sky and water surface. No bumps or slides are experienced when they are lost from sight by the people on shore.

Spooky stuff.

Do planes fly level or follow the curvature of the earth?
Do architects take into consideration the curvature of the earth when designing large items?
How about the space shuttle, or satellites ? Are they in orbit, or do they just sit there in place ? And yes, if you do research, you'll know when constructing long-span bridges, the curvature of the earth is calculated into the design. I learned that as a kid when they were building the Verrazano Bridge in NY.

Plaines flying level? I was thinking about that but hadn't posted yet. Trimming the elevator keeps the plane at a near constant altitude. (the elevator is the flaps on the tail section and control the plane's nose up and down) Say you are flying level at 1000 feet you will gain altitude the further you fly. You need to make adjustments to cause the plane to nose down to follow the curvature. I wish I could explain it better. I took a small commuter flight to Chicago once. If I remember, only one seat on each side of the center aisle. It was a small plane and the pilot kept the door open to the cockp[it so I could watch him fly it. Once we got to altitude he kept adjusting the controls and I bet it was to maintain altitude. You could feel the plane change pitch just a bit when he did.

What's compelling about the "Flat Earther" (and other conspiracy theory) phenomena is that it was all but vanished...until the Internet age and social media. These media provide the echo chamber for such ridiculous conspiracy theories to flourish...Internet searches provide all the confirmation bias one needs to support whatever flawed logic they have. Just look at the idiocy with the woke culture and people unable to define what a woman is. This nonsense never happened before the Internet and social media.

Anybody who wants to find information to support their opinions--right or wrong--is bound to find whatever they're searching for. Modern education seems to have eliminated the importance of analytical thinking. "Question everything" used to be what I remember being taught in university; now it's "Believe everything you see".

Aircraft are in a sense tethered to earth, by gravity. The main reason a perfectly trimmed aircraft with its power settings constant would gain altitude as it continues along its flightpath, is that its weight is decreasing (weight =mass x gravity) over time due to fuel burn, and the nose is trimmed down to keep the plane from climbing as its weight decreases. Other reasons include flying into an area with changes in temperature and or atmospheric pressure. Or the pilot changing the throttle settings to fly faster or slower, or climb or descend.
On the majority of commercial flights, pilots only actually "fly" the airplane for a few minutes during takeoff and climb, and the final stages of landing. The rest of the flight is managed by the autopilot. Any changes you see pilots doing in flight are usually changing the settings on the autopilot for a change in course or altitude, and changing radio frequencies and other minor things like that.

Indeed. The aircraft's movement forward is against the atmosphere. Without going into the physics or the equations, simplified it is what he stated. Gravity is the rope. Gravity is a constant. Just like satellites and the big, round ball of cheese in the night sky... the moon. They don't fly off into space due to... gravity.
 
I'll put this here to ponder: Why do we need Saturn rockets to escape the earth's atmosphere, rather than just let a plane fly at a straight horizontal plane vs. the earth ?
