Show your Age, Toy's you Grew up with

But when was that toy manufactured in relation to the timeline for such a stroker kit?

That's the interesting part.

"Everyone" seems to think the 451 is a fairly recent thing.

I've heard tell of folks doing it as far back as the 80's, but I imagine real professionals figured it out much earlier.

I find it interesting that the nomenclature made it to a toy back then.

Steam and slots Baby ! The steam is my old set from the 60s that I came across the other day when reorganizing some storage. The slots pictured are a contemporary German made big set that I bought I few years ago because I could. I liked the slots better; when I was young I had the the Thunder Jet HO size.

You really know where you stand when the lunch box you carried to school as a kid is on display in the Henry Ford Museum.
No picture unfortunately, but a few years back my wife and I were visiting the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. That year they had a themed display for '60's every day culture. We came across a display case containing kids metal lunch boxes and thermos'. And there it was, the "Fantastic Four" metal lunch box, just like I carried to early grade school.
Wow you had a metal lunch box...I just had a brown paper bag.:(

I've got a similar steamer from back then as well!

I've still got my Wilesco steam engine around somewhere as well. Put a lot of fuel and water through that as a kid. I always had interesting school science projects because they were "steam powered". Too bad the government wouldn't let me count all that steam time towards a Stationary Engineer's license, lol.

how about this:

Offset grinding a crankshaft goes back aways too......pretty easy to turn a 440 into a 470.

Erector sets.
Had them in the late 60’s. I didn’t read every post but with so many mechanical types on the site, some of you must have had them
I had a set in the late 50's....didn't really care for it all that much. Wanted a Lego set when they first hit the stores but never got one....probably because it was kinda expensive. For the most part, I was happy playing with those rubber toy cars until dad bought me a Hubley Model A pickup to assemble. Based on where we lived at the time that was around 59. Ended up with a Model A roadster, a station wagon too and a 30 Packard Sport Phaeton, I really liked the Packard and painted it yellow just like it was in the picture on the box. Ironic because my first car was yellow.....but it wasn't too long until I was messing with edger motors and go-carts and forgot about the Legos but still built an AMT model or two during all of that.
