my mom would buy
them paddles with a rubber line/string & red ball attached
we'd hit rocks or dirt clods after they broke

I think she got them for US
so she could use them to paddle my butt
when or "if" she could catch me (you wait till dad is home)
when they were no longer useful as a toy

my Mom had one too. Got tired of it and on trash day, I snuck out and put it in the can just before they picked up. Didn't stop her, she had any number of weapons to beat me with. Ask my best friend, I needed it.
