My da just put together a 340 in his 1973 plymouth roadrunner since sunday he has burned up 3 coils and the balance resistor is to hot we have replaced the voltage regulator and even tryed a new thermastat any ideas? were else should we look

I'm guessing this is electronic ignition?

things we have tryed already

changed the balsnnce ressitor twice.coils 3 times, wiring looks fine.balance resisitor is super hot driving down the road and after about 20 minutes have to replace the coil to get it started again.

First, the coil has to be marked "FOR ELECTRONIC IGNITION". Secondly, you need to make sure the ballast resistor is the right one. There are a couple or maybe three different ones to use. I am not sure which resistance ballast is correct for yours.

cool

cool thanks i am going to the shop now and will inform my dad. we also think it may be the headers they are riduclously hot cant even touch the firewall. the ole man picked a bunch of asbestos wrap so he will arap the headers also he is replacing the fan right now it has a clutch fan. thanks for the help and i will keep you all informed of the progress will attach pics aswell

If headers are 'rediculously hot' first thing I would check is the timing. It sounds like it is way retarded. This has nothing to do with your other problems. At what temperature is the motor running? Did you replace the thermostat because the gauge showed it was running hot? The more info the better to try and get your problem resolved. BTW, the ballast resistor does get hot while the motor is running; it's normal.

we did replce it not because the gauge was reading hot but because it was the wrong one the timing was off it was dialed inat 10 should have been 8 well after wrapping the heads and changing the fan it is alot cooler and as for the balance resistor being hot were aware of that but it did burn up so thats replaced as far as electrical goes everything is reading normal nothing wrong there we got her running again this afternoon it made but somthing happend i wasnt there i think a coil burnt up again when i get to the shop tomarow i will have more info thank for the input guys very appreciated
